Soldat Forums Traffic Trends
« on: October 18, 2007, 04:42:06 pm »
From time to time I find myself mindlessly browsing the forum stats page, looking at generally how the forums have been doing popularity-wise and trying to gauge trends over time.

That is hard.

Alas, I exported some data from the forums database into OpenOffice.org Calc and graphed it.  Below is a graph of the hits/day on the forums since the day we moved to the new forums (each datapoint is one day), which is the date range shown.  Attached below that is the OpenOffice.org spreadsheet file with the data and this graph, in case anyone wants to mess around with the data.  OpenOffice.org is freely available from http://openoffice.org and can be used in just about every way that Micrisoft Excel can.  You can also export it to CSV data if you want to import it into your own database or do something else with it.

The line named "power regression" is a statistically-generated line (I didn't just randomly draw it in or anything) indicating the general trend of activity on the forums, using some standard that I don't know anything about.

Hopefully someone else here will get at least some amusement out of this:

1.4.0 release date, when we got lots of traffic from digg/slashdot/del.icio.us (over 1400 people on the forums in a 15 minute period, continued for most of the day)

Good to know its going up. What's up with those random huge drops? Like the one torward the beginning and the one just before 10/06?

like 2 pixels away from the 10 0000 mark  >:(

It seems like it has peeked, and is decending from here.
Probably not the case though.

I suspect it is just a dip like those you can see earlier, just judging from the overall traffic on the servers lately.

Some of the dips are when I was moving the forums between servers or was having server issues.  Even 12 hours of downtime is enough to drop it down. That dip is just one datapoint, meaning it is one problem involving one day.  I could probably draw on the graph and explain what each dip and peak is ;)
