Adjust the outer stroke around the transparent image and use that one.

Sounds like you're using a version of IE which's version is below IE7.

I havent had any problems with image rendering in IE7. The transparency works quite well.

Which has nothing to do with png transparency.
IE 7 is better than IE 6 in the eyes of a web developer. Its one of those lesser of two evils things.
