Imagine the lag.

ROTFL? Scenery (as a .gif too) would be downloaded so it would be displayed by your PC not by server.

Yeah, at the worst it would cause some slowdown on older computers. But it would create some interesting mapping possibilities, none of which I can think of at this time.

Allready fx_P-cloud scenery FPS lags like hell on weaker machines(in big groups lags even the middle-class ones)
I guess big gifs would lag it even more.

Yeah... not really good principally because amateur mappers are going to try to experiment with them... and you surely know where this goes.

Well... I believe this is going to be an interesting version to see - first one from enesce + chris. But, I don't want to see too many features at the same time though. I do not wish you to impress us too much all at the beginning because it will be harder to keep up with the current motivation to work on soldat later on.

Don't use the word lag if you're talking about computer slowdown. It confuses people.

EnEsCe will have more details on specific additions and fixes in a while.
MM wrote that yesterday (for me, Poland, 21:38). I'm not trying to urge on anybody;D, but... "a while" is something different than "in a few days"...

Maybe the .gif feature will have an on/off setting.
Nothing is ever easy.  If it is, you've done it wrong.

If it's true I assume these will be downloaded with the map dude. There will be no lag since it will be processed locally.

Don't use the word lag use the phrase 'video lag' cause it is lag but merly by your video card and not your net card. It confuses -Vis- :P

Besides I'm not looking forward to this new version TOO much because I like the video lag bug from the flames. I wanted a new skill in Hexer to use this bug to make a new skill effect: TimeShift

I looked on EC's website. And saw an animation video saying that there would be .gif's allowed as scenery. If that's true, Soldat will be ruined. Imagine the lag.
A few important points:
1) the gifs are rendered on the client machine.  This is not a hard thing to do by any nearly modern computer and any "lag" created by it will be purely local (the same way that big maps with lots of sceneries now lag a lot on computers with weaker video cards)
2) Just because the feature is there doesn't mean it is going to be abused/overused.  Sure, some mappers will make maps that use a ton of animated sceneries, but don't instantly think that every map is going to have hundreds of animations.  To say that this is going to ruin the game is alarmist and pessimistic.

There are tens or hundreds of possibilities created by this feature being added to the game, just give the community time after 1.4.3 is out and we'll see the community devs/artists/mappers work their magic and innovate, creating some amazing things.

:)

It's great that we'll finally be able to use gifs in maps.

Flashing lights, flames, moving generators, moving water, dripping caves, fish darting around in water, smoke, vehicles vibrating in idle, swaying ropes, sections of maps which can be seen at one point and then covered at another and more! Now all we need is ambient sounds so we can hear all these things happening...

Hope it all goes well guys.
