Halo-esque Team Icons
« on: July 13, 2006, 02:47:41 pm »
The general idea is to replace the coloured shirts (e.g. red for Alpha, blue for Bravo) with a more noticable feature.

It would be a modification on the arrow that points above your head. Above allies it would either flash red/blue or would stay a solid colour. Enemies would have no indicator. Also, the names shown to the left and right of the screen (your team-mates) could also give rudimentary information as to what actions they are taking (firing, taking damage, dead, normal). This could be relayed through colours (red for damage, yellow for firing, gray for dead, green for normal). You would also be able to wear whatever clothes you want.

This could feed into a new bonus for registered members; they could have a small 16*16 logo above their name.

Sorry about the monotone I write with, I'm verry tired and there isn't any caffine in sight.

I think it would be good enough if team members have indicators colored according to what team they're on and keep the red/blue gosteks.

The main problem with the team coloured shirts is that new players oft get confused by people disguising themselves (red hair, pants, shoes and blue sweater). If you just get rid of it, you wouldn't have all the fuss.

I know it would probably help the new people also understand that anyone with an arrow are friendly.

If this were to be implemented, the player should be allowed to toggle it on and off.

I personally don't need the help at all.

It's not entirely for the help either, the other features (such as the coloured names) could help out veteran players as well. The meatshield M79ing noobs could give you an accurate idea of what is happening up ahead (e.g. make them run up first). I do this all the time, but I'd like to know exactly what is happening up there, not just if they accidentaly blew themselves up.

Plus, it would be freakn' cool to wear camouflage in team games (not just DM and Rambo).

I think we won't be needing that for awhile.  It sounds a little complicated, but it does work for other 3D games.

Good idea. Sometimes my teammates or enemies wear their pants with the color of the opposing side, and as fast-paced as Soldat is, it can be kinda disorienting for a second.

Well you could always alter your gosteks to have clear differences among both teams.

Reckon:
How could you alter the gosteks ? Editing the size/colour of their body parts (mind=out of gutter) wouldn't really work for anyone other than yourself. The idea here is to implement something for everyone, or at least find a way to mod it.

Yeah, if anyone has any ideas on how to make the "arrow" thingy put itself above the background and other people, please speak up.

I especially like the 16x16 icon idea, it just seems 16x16 is a bit big. maybe 10x10. In the game, having 16x16 squares of logos appeaing would get confusing. But yes having your own logo would pretty much rock. but 16x16 would work out alot better, for more detail =P

EDIT: I worked it out on my own, and a 16x16 is not as combersome as i thought it was...

i can say that i have edited my gostek's in the past to things like the Stick man mod for Bravo and things like that to make a clear impresson on which team is which...

here are some examples...

this is just one that i made myself

here is the stickman...

and here is the skeleton...

of course for all of these is is possible to change colours of; legs, skin shirt etc.

btw i do have extras but cannot be bothered putting them on...

To "The_Ninja":

It's a good idea just to change the gosteks, and it does make a lot of sense. That being said, I think there's a reason that the current edition haven't been changed since release of the game. They do look nice, and are functional (overlooking the previously stated problem). Putting an arrow above their heads makes it possible to get the best of both worlds (good gostek, and solving the problem without editing it).

And I also whipped up a new screenie with the proper pixel count (that's a 15*16 you've got there jbigz).

you sure? lemme check... noep i measuerd it again, its 16x16. i put a black box in my icon, that makes it look like a 15x15 i suppose....

EDIT: and after looking at yours, yours is 19x19... but are you playing on fullscreen mode? i play on windowed, so the size might be different.

i like the logo, it would be so frikin awesome, it would really customize your game, the indicator would be cool too, because i sometimes go on a rampage and try to kill my own members by accident, even tho i waste my time on them. i just like the logo idea. maybe in the gostek section where the head is, make a huge square above it and let people put a pic into it. OOO im gonna try that right now! :D

Since I usually stick on bravo, I just colored team2's gosteks invisible, so the only people on the map are enemies ;D

If he was confused about the black box, he probably would have thought it was 14x14, not 15x15.

Anyway, I don't like the idea of all this extra junk appearing around my opponents. It might screw around with my aiming.

To "-Vis-":

You wouldn't get any extra junk above your opponents. In fact, with all the extra crap around your allies, they'll be even harder to see.

Allow camping to continue being viable requires no large floating arrows pointing out your position.

To "2big4u":

Cool pic. How did you get your helmet to fly in front of you like that ?
