Can you run a dedicated server on web hosting?
« on: November 07, 2007, 01:02:50 pm »
I used to think it was possible until I saw that you had to execute a application, so how would you execute the application via FTP or remotly? like how does enesce soldat server hosting work?

Its not likely.

But if your hosting has no idea what its doing there might be a way around it.

the short answer is "yes it is possible if you have PHP or CGI access"

the long answer is "yes, but your host will shut down your account once they see you doing something like this, and even if you get it working it'll run horribly because web servers are very bursty and not intended for running things like game servers"

It isn't worth your time.  If you want to have your own Soldat server, rent one.

Use shell().

Code: [Select]
<?php
shell
("nohup ./soldatserver > /dev/null &");
?>

Make sure you're in the same dir where you extracted the zip. For more info, read http://devs.u13.net/wiki/Server .

Mike, you won't be allowed to. Your account will get suspended swiftly and it would run like a chicken on gravy. Especially for that price.

For that price you shouldn't even try to run it. I'm sure you have bandwidth and space restrictions as well.

You might be able to host a 1 slot server!

lol thats where everyone is wrong, as I said I already talked to Ian and he said its ok, the only thing I'm having problems with is getting him to host the .exe file and I have Unlimited bandwith and space!

Then if he is your friend you might as well just ask him for a shell account on the server so that you can run it properly.  If he's not giving you that, then he apparently doesn't want you running programs on there.

You can NOT run a dedicated server at a shared host, it will lag horribly. Try it and you'll remember my words ;)

You, sir, are an ass.  you came here asking whether or not to do it.  EVERY SINGLE POST in this thread said "it is a bad idea, it'll get you kicked off of your post, and it won't work well, even if you can get it working."

If you knew you were just going to say "he's my friend, I'm going to do it anyway" WHY did you even come here to ask for our input on it?
