He's wrong(I've installed Win ME, linux ,Win2003, win XP Pro and Vista and I've never needed anything special).
All you need is the installation disk for XP then you just follow the instructions. Of course you'll have to find newer drivers for your hardware(if you want better performance) but XP should have default versions just like vista. If you got your OS pre installed then I would actually suggest that you make a clean install as they fill it with junk.

I do not know how the "downgrading" goes when it comes to keeping your files. Vista had a feature of keeping the entire windows and other folders. Make a back up of the files you want on an other disk or device and just install XP.

I do not know what sound card you have but allways I had to get drivers from the net as I never had sound when I installed a new OS.

BTW why are do you want to change to XP and not keep vista

well its a custom computer so does that change anything? and i heard vista was bad for gaming so that is why I'm changing to xp because it takes less processor speed.

Correct, Vista is bad for everything.

You shouldn't have too hard of a time.  The fact that it is a custom computer doesn't really make a difference, you'll be able to find all of the drivers you need online, just as if it was a Dell, HP, or something else.

You'll need to know the motherboard manufacturer and model so that you can find your drivers online.  You'll need to know the manufacturer and model of your video card for the same reason.  Aside from that, you should be all set.

Just so you know, Vista SP1 is comming out in a month or so that addresses a lot of issues. And if you want to play the most modern games you'll probably take more advantage from Vista's DX10 than XP using up less system resources.

I've heard mostly bad things about Vista.  The system requirements alone take up most of my computer.

Imma stick with XP until I upgrade or until Some Service Packs come out for the thing.  Most OS's are probably unstable when they are first released anyways.

Downgrading is quite different from upgrading. When you insert a vista disc on xp tons of windows will pop up and threaten you to upgrade or else. When you insert an XP disc in vista it will laugh at you for 5 minutes then crash. You probably are going to have to reformat your hard drive on this one. Have you done that before?

Just so you know, Vista SP1 is comming out in a month or so that addresses a lot of issues. And if you want to play the most modern games you'll probably take more advantage from Vista's DX10 than XP using up less system resources.

Vista is gonna get slower, hurray!

You have nothing to fear from vista's cpu usage if you have at least a dual core. If you have 2GB RAM then you'll be ok with games too. GPU wise is only if you want to use DX10 which has some nice features.

I think you should wait until SP1 comes out, your system would play either game on vista fine, you might be better off keeping vista.

take your windows XP disk and put it in the drive.

Restart your computer

Follow the instructions for installing windows XP (this will wipe your hard drive, make sure that you back anything up)

Bja888 I am put off by your ignorance, since you are usually so knowledgeable about these kinds of things. Service pack 1 is fixing a large variety of issues with vista, including compatibility and performance.

Half the problem with vista was that stupid people thought they needed vista so they get it for a 5 year old computer with no compatibility and barely the minimum requirements for vista.

Sorry, I could care less about vista right now. I'm a little out of the loop.
And I wont start caring until I can buy a vista x64 edition that can be activated more than once. So far, said software is MIA.

What is your sound card, is it onboard or is it a card.

you are probably missing drivers.

you need the manufacturer to find a driver. if you got your computer from dell or some other company, go to their site and look around for vista drivers.

Try "scan for hardware changes"

or uninstall the hardware and reboot and try to install it.

Didn't you get a cd with drivers? Most hardware come with a cd containing drivers.
