Soldat won't be coded to work on a Mac.  Too much work and MM personally doesn't like Macs.  You can still play it using an emulator.  Try using Google to find one.

Actually Optik, I have good news for you... if you have an Intel Mac.

If you have an Intel Mac, you can use a program called Crossover, which allows you to run Windows programs natively, without needing a seperate install of windows. That means Soldat or any Windows program (capable of running through Crossover) will run even better on a Mac than a PC lol, since Macs are superior to PC's. Even OS X surpasses Windows in everything it is capable of. The new version - Windows Vista is actually a bloated upgrade of XP and it's interface is an OS X ripoff. "PC, you are coming to a sad realization. Allow or Deny?"

So if you have an intel mac, then install and enjoy. :)

Actually, OSX is the most slow unstable feck I have ever used. Used it for 3 years in school, and hope I will never see the damn thing again.

Still, would be nice to have soldat for mac, so that we had some real games to LAN on our school. Not that it would be pleasant with those 1 button shitty mouses.

Well, it depends on how old the Macs at your school are. Even in our tech department, we still have old 300MHz systems running OS X and they have usually run well. However, for certain tasks requiring up to date ram, they will freeze or screw up royally. We've had quite a few problems simply burning media onto CDR's. The one button mice are also a pain in the ass. From the sounds of it, yeah you guys still have old G3's running probably.

The Intel Macs, especially the ones from this year will blow all competition straight out of the water. Depending on exact required technical specifications, they will run Windows programs better than their PC counterpart of similar specs.

OS X 10.5 is well built and solid. From my experience with OS X 10.3-10.5, it runs very fast, efficient and has never crashed. I have frozen programs, but that was an issue with bad coding in certain freeware, memory issues or buggy beta software.  It's as good as the best version of Linux, I'm sure.

So is it confirmed that Soldat can and will run with the program Crossover?

I personally haven't had a chance to test Soldat on Crossover. I don't own an Intel Mac yet, only G4. However, from what I've seen the new Macs run, Soldat should work just fine. There should still be a free beta of Crossover version 1.0 that you can download. Even the beta should be fine, so try it out.

Really, from what I have seen it is a crap shoot with parallels or some program like crossover, with team fortress 2 specifically, one worked normally and the other had some serious graphics flaws. Parallels ran with piss poor FPS and bootcamp was fine, because all it is is GParted for the mac.

Well, some of these programs like Crossover are quite new, so of course there are going to be some bugs to work out running some programs natively in OS X. Best thing to do is test out the current software and see what runs best. The few games and programs I saw Crossover run, ran without a glitch. The version 1 beta of Crossover did however have a few minor graphic glitches and dips in FPS when running Steam games.

I just like the absolute stability of OS X. It's a solid Unix-based OS. Which is why, when it can run a windows program well, it runs it really well. But, that's enough pushing Macs right now. Everyone is going to get sick of it lol. Everyone has their personal preference. I like Windows too (except for the registry, virii, etc and common freezing). I'm learning programming in Windows. It's just it's nice to see an alternative to Windows.. that can run windows programs.

Turn the intro off in the config. Why would u want to play soldat on a mac? Its just the same as running windows 98 on a psp, its crappy, unstable and slow.

The only reason why macs seem to run stuff faster is the fact that you can only really have so much stuff hardware wise on a mac.  And they program the OS according to that, so everything is more efficiently. Where as PCs have so much broader of hardware you can buy and put into your computer, so the coders at microsoft have to plan accordingly, but since there are thousands and thousands of possibly hardware configs, and its next to impossible to test compatability with EVERY single setup, you have to comprimise. Bugs will happen, shit wont run as good cause of stuff not being optimized for your hardware.

I personally dont like macs. Never have. Never will, I like to know every single part I put in my computer, and put it there myself. I also like to have options. And I gaurentee that you can get a more powerfull PC than you can a mac.

I do agree that vista is garbage. Worst OS ever imo.

I've got a Mac, and I'd like to play soldat on it. I used to play on a PC, but that thing is such a piece of crap that I never touch it anymore. My little brother uses it now. And I think it would be fun to play him online from my mac. I've tried the crossover thing, even with the intro off, and it sits at the startup screen and you can't click on anything. Parallels is hugely expensive just to play a game. Are there any cheaper alternatives that will run soldat?

Bmer,

Here are some things to try:
- Install wine through macports (google for more info).  Free project that can run Soldat reasonably well
- Download a trial of Parallels to see if the game works in there.  The trial is either 14 or 30 days long
- Download a trial of VMWare fusion for the same thing, either 14 or 30 days
- Try using Virtualbox, a free piece of software comparable to vmware fusion/parallels
- Download a trial of Codeweavers' Crossover Games product (7 days I think) and try it there.

Clearly the ideal cases would be to have Wine or Virtualbox work, but I'm not sure if it does.  I recently got a Mac but haven't tried Soldat in any of those yet... and I really am not intending to put Windows on this thing just to play games either.

...What? Macs are absolutely awesome; they're really fast, visually appealing, just as reliable as Linux (though no where near as customizable) because their both UNIX derivatives, and don't get viruses / spycrap. They completely blow Windows out of the water and are very much worth the price.

As a matter of fact, this spiffy hotel I'm in has a mac right next to the TV. I've checked it out and stuff, played with it, if it wasn't locked down by the hotel's permissions, I'd try installing and playing Soldat in a heartbeat. I'll find out soon enough how great it'll be though, I'll have a macbook pro in my hands within a few days (rest assured it'll never run Winblows or Linux as that'd be completely defeating the purpose)

I have used both computers extensively.  I used Macs for over 3 years in graphic design school.  Never once in all my years of using a PC for personal use have I ever said to myself "gosh, I wish I had a Mac so I could run this!".  However, during school, I said the opposite to myself at least 1000 times.

Macs crash far more often.  The cannot do as much.  Cannot change parts.

Now Macs crash far more often from what I've seen.  But, If your PC crashes for some reason, and you lose a file.  If you knows what you're doing, you can go into DOS mode and recover any lost files from memory.  On a Mac, you're f**kED.

Mac users often complain about "well my PC runs slow and blah blah blah".  Well maybe if you didn't load it up with temporary files and viruses from watching porn and downloading warez, you wouldn't have this issue.  I keep my PC relatively clean and I have NEVER had my PC crash on me with no explanation.

Then they go off and say "well i shouldn't have to worry about keeping my computer clean".  That's like saying "My Ferrari is good and fast and awesome etc that I have never have to change the oil or tires!"

Macs need emulators to run 90% of the software that's out there.  I swear to god.  Every time I tried to install a program for ripping movies so i can make them into a flash file, or running some basic chat lines so I could talk with this designer fellow at the College, or trying to run a program that converts one file to another, or ANYTHING.  It wouldn't be able to read the file.  I would have to go and find a "Mac version".  Which usually didn't exist and I would have to go find another program.  There are actually special "Mac sites" that has software just for Macs because they're a bunch of elitist cigarettes.

But it's not all bad for Macs!  I mean when it's time for fun, Macs have plenty of great games at their dispos - Oh wait.

Also, let's say a certain part of you Mac breaks.  On a PC it's as simple as buying a new one, and putting in the place of the old one.  Install software if applicable, done.  With a Mac, you have to buy a whole new f**king system.  Waste of time, waste of money.

If you're a 16 year old kid who does nothing but download music, watch movies and look at pictures.  By all means.  Get a Mac.  Seeing as that's all it's good for.  Anything beyond that is a stretch.

I've barely even scratched the surface of this bs, because I don't feel like defending myself from a bunch of Mac fanboys.  But I am sick and f**king tired of people ranting about how great Macs are.  They're crippled PCs.  That's it.  Dumbed down so that any trained monkey can use it.

Go ahead and like Macs all you want, I don't care.  But don't you DARE claim they're better.

A few things to try:

Drag a disallowed app (try something like terminal to start)to the desktop, right click on the app and hit show package contents. Modify the IDENTIFIER line in info.plist to some allowed app (like iCal). Save and play.

If that doesn't work, try copying something big to the desktop, and then open a disallowed app while it is copying.

Select about 20-30 apps from the applications folder including ONE disallowed one. Hit apple-o, and wait a couple mins. When you can, force quit the rest of the apps.

iDante as well. Try to come up with some sort of argument instead of just calling him an idiot.

That said, let's try to keep this from being the same old Mac vs PC crap.

From what I remember from looking at the status of Soldat on WINE, it runs very well. Although that was a couple versions ago, so maybe it doesn't any more.

Yes, lets please not have this thread turn into a religious debate.  It is pretty clear that Linux, Windows and Mac users will never agree when anyone in the discussion is stuck to one side.

Has anyone had luck with:
- Crossover Games and Soldat
- Virtualbox and Soldat
- WINE and Soldat (on a Mac)
- Parallels and Soldat
- VMWare Fusion and Soldat

I have tried all of them and had one problem or another.  With Virtualbox, VMWare Fusion and Parallels, the problem was that my mouse input was amplified by about 10,000 so that 1px of input movement would translate to some huge amount of movement on the screen.

Anyways, for some reason, wine wouldn't install on my computer. Neither Crossover or Crossover Games would run soldat properly, it would sit at the startup screen and not move. Parallels, you need a Windows install disc to install it on a "virtual machine." VMWare asked me for a serial number. Not sure why, but I'll have another go at that today.

I have an MacBook Pro 2.2ghz 15inch model.
I tried: crossover, darwine, paralles and Q using Windows plus an Ubuntu install and Wine..

parallels works best for me, but in all cases BE will kick me as soon as it's updated, so no online soldat for mac.

Boot camp is the only answer, that is if you have an Intel Mac.

To demo VMWare Fusion, you just need to fill something out on their site and you'll get a serial key for free that will work for however long the demo is supposed to last

On my macbook 1 with wine for mac it does the same thing it does on ubuntu. That is, text is drawn to the bottom left corner upside down, crashes after battleye updates online, and has horrible fps. If those were fixed then it would be awesome.

I've spent countless hours trying to make Soldat work on my Mac. Boot Camp never got past the partitioning part, otherwise I think that would've worked best. But inside the OS, I tried basically everything, although I didn't want to buy a new copy of Windows XP for an emulator, so that complicated things further. Crossover, which works very well with my other programs, did not work for Soldat. The whole program froze while finishing loading the profiles screen (every time). In the end, though, I ended up using the family PC which ended up becoming mine because my dad bought his own laptop and no one else used it.

For Soldat not being also made for the Mac, what's the reason? I'm pretty sure Michal just needs to work on other things instead, but if it's not that, someone tell me.

As for the Mac vs. PC thing this thread is inching on, I'd like to say as a PC and Mac owner, Macs are best if you just want a computer you can keep your stuff on (like music, videos, and stuff) and work with the internet without feeling insecure (no spyware or anything!). It's also good for making videos and stuff. But the main thing is that it lasts. I've had this Macbook for almost two years and it runs as good as new. Its only problem is the amount of programs that Macs have. Meaning, PCs have a wider variety of software and PCs are the only choices if you love gaming.

Bringing dead topics to life is evil.
Windows Freezes
Mac Crashes
I got the second kind of Mac that went out on market, and it does both, I call it the WinTosh. Whoever you are Tosh, I have won you.

I downloaded crossover can't get it to work with soldat. VMware works fine just bad FPS. Bootcamp is well just like a normal PC and I can play any game in that fine, just hate having to boot into windows then back to OS X to actually do stuff other then game.

Makin yet ANOTHER topic about soldat on mac is probably twice as evil.
I seem to have the same problem as Achi with installing bootcamp. Haven't looked in to it very well though.
And CanadianCheese, you say VMware works fine? Have you tried playing online?

I still think that Soldat should be able to be played on a Mac. There is nothing wrong with them, I am typing on one right now in my Digital Design class.

I made a small fix so that you can use lin on Mac OS X: http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=22082.0
Soldat 1.5.0 runs with 60fps on my iMac. I use parallels to emulate it and I think it's ok.
