Starting out weapons?
« on: November 29, 2007, 06:18:54 pm »
OK, I am a complet N00b to Soldat -- I've never played online, and I have only just started playing against bots. What are the best weapons to use for someone just starting out? I like the Desert Eagles a lot -- they are pretty fun. Still getting the arc down. I also like the AK, cause I can lie down and snipe without the HORRENDOUS delay from the Barrett. The SPAS is kinda ... meh. It's alright. Same with the MP5 -- it's got a good rate of fire, but it takes SO MANY BULLETS to put someone down. Chainsaw is awesomeness, knife is not bad. M79 is pretty useful. However, since I am so green, I need some help. What do y'all suggest?

Single-shot weapons tend to take some time to while, depending on people.  For your case, automatic weapons would be your best choice.  I reconmend you stick with the AK-74 or the Steyr AUG, until you find a better weapon to use.  They both can go far distances and do an effective amount of damage.

I advise the M79. It's preacticly made to be a starting weapon. For autos, you might want to choose the MP5 or the steyr, as the AK and Minimi can take a while to get skilled at.

Start out with desert eagles man! If not, ruger, or spas. But deagles are a great starting out weapon because they're difficult to use (the arc is one of the reasons)... and once you get the hang of them other weapons should be easier to use, imo. Thats what happened with me. :D

Start with an auto, you might not be that good with it but it will make you better at the game quicker.

Don't start with the M79, its the easy way out. Instead start out with the other powerful weapons (spas & ruger, like cappy suggested).  They take longer to master but you'll be alot better.

I really encourage the steyr, I think it's a good hybrid of all the autos. Weapons such as the M79, barret, and deagles are 'specialty' weapons. By that I mean if you learn one of those, you won't have any starting ground when switching to another weapon.

I just played online today.

M79 I did ok, but I was on some sort of mod server and it didn't have very much damage and the nades were 8 in a clip???
AK-74 I did ok.
Ruger I actually liked -- headshot machine. But the recycle rate is bad. The Ruger is a pretty good gun.
The Spas sux. Seriously, this thing has no range.
Steyr is ok. It's a midrange thing; I like the AK better.
Minimi blows.

In answer to Tactical Sniper, I don't like the M79 much now that I have played against actual players (not bots).

I set my bots on "stupid" and run around with saw and M79. Fun, but doesn't work online.

In answer to BondJamesBond, Steyr I do not like as much because it is not as accurate. With the AK, as I explained, I can hit what I aim at most times.

Right now, favorite weapons are Ruger, AK, and Deagle. I still am bad with the eagles though...

I would stay a good distance away from modified weapons when first starting out because the stats will throw you off when you're using the actual default mod.
For signatures, you are allowed only one image in your signature which may not be wider and taller than 300 and 125 pixels, and may not be over 20kB in file size. No BMPs are allowed.

Just a suggestion with the steyr, every 4 to 6 shots just let go of the button and click again. This will make it far more accurate. You can also get rid of nearly all inaccuracy by pressing prone. (default key is x) I'd also suggest practicing proning in midair ("supermanning") while firing, in order to get both movement and accurate fire.

Otherwise, you're right in that the steyr can be pretty ineffective.

Also, the minimi can be lethal of you get your fingers off the directional buttons while firing, because you don't even have to worry about rapidly clicking. The AK is easier to use, though. Stick with that for now.

The spas can be brutal in close quarters, the thing to remember is get close to your opponent. It's also somewhat useful to fire backwards when you're trying to get somewhere quickly, as the kickback will actually boost you forward.

With the ruger, let go of the movement keys when you fire, it helps with accuracy.

I'd stay away from the barret for now obviously, but if you do decide to use it (on a large map preferably) jump up, prone, hit jet if you want to move forward, fire, and unprone.

As for m79...Well, if you don't like it that's your choice, but getting even slightly good with it can prove very useful. Because so many people use it, you'll have no problem finding one to use as a secondary, which leads to some great combinations.

I started with Barrett, until I started getting kicked for "aimbotting"
now I use knife, which feels a LOT like barrett, especially since I changed the 'throw weapon' key to middle click
besides that I use deagles, mp5, and spaz.
never did get the hang of ruger

For starting out, use M79, pretty much anyone with a hand can kill with that gun frequently.

I actually am starting to really like the Ruger.

It deals a good amount of damage and I am getting better accuracy.

Very fun to kill two with same bullet (I'm pretty sure this was Ruger, not Barrett -- if not, correct me. I just remember I did it).

Well, I suggested the Steyr because I thought it could help you when using other weapons. For example, if you get good with the Steyr, you'll have a decent starting ground for all the other autos. Whereas if you start with the ruger, you'll have trouble switching to any other weapon. So as I beginner, you shouldn't start off by picking favorites yet for two reasons:
Our preferences change over time. Guaranteed.
Different situations call for different weapons.

That's my suggestion, but you know, to each his own.

Do not start off with the M79. You'll get too used to it and it will be hard to kick the habit. Start off with the Steyr or AK.

Honestly I can say, try to get good with the Deagles, people always bring up the "gun for right situations", but I've never and problems only use the Deagles.  They are kinda hard to use, but if you get really good you can get 3 kills per clip (3 bullets for each person and a nade + bullet for last).

I will say if you do go pure eagle the hard part is the arc effs up your aim with all other guns, or at least it does for me. Ruger, AUG, Eagles, and a good spas are good weapons though.

Don't practice with bots, it's practically useless. Also, use whatever gun suits you/the map/your enemies best. In fact, sticking to one weapon is probably the worst thing you can do.

HK is a good starter weapon, since you can reload fast, and it does good damage close range, and its fast.
Ruger, its simple to aim if you have low sensitivity, also, can be one of the most helpful guns in a clan war, as apposed to spas, which is stronger and really good for boosts and 1 hit close up kills.

As for a secondary... Knife or Law would be good for you. Law helps your long range shots, it will help you if you ever want to use a Barrett or Ruger. Knife, I'd have to say, Knife is the most popular secondary, mostly its a one hit kill, and if your good with it and can throw it fast (lots of beginners can't) then you'd have no problem attacking from above.

I've played with bots a lot and it's at least improved my aim D:
