Firefox 3 Beta 1: much faster and less RAM!
« on: December 11, 2007, 04:57:43 pm »
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-beta.html

The Firefox 3 beta 1 has been out for a while and I've been using it for a few weeks.  It is a huge amount faster than Firefox 2 and all of the memory leakage problems related to Flash pages appear to have been fixed.

Not many extensions have been upgraded to work with the new version, but some of the bigger ones have.  A lot of the other ones work by using the Nightly Tester Tools extension, which makes older extensions compatible with the latest beta versions.

I strongly suggest that anyone who thinks Firefox should be faster tries this.  Also, when Fx2 and earlier used to use huge amounts of RAM because of memory leaks, this beta uses a tiny amount.  Even when there aren't memory problems in the older versions, Fx3 beta 1 uses less overall.  It now renders extremely fast.  I wouldn't be surprised if, once Firefox 3 is released, it is found that it is faster than just about every other brower in terms of loading/rendering times.

I suggest anyone who has tried Fx in the past and gone back to IE or Opera also checks it out.

Lemme know what you guys think!

I can just say wow...

I heard about it, as I'm a Firefox user, but I wasn't sure if it's stable enough. Well now that I tried it, I can say only the best things about it. I hope that the themes  will get fixed soon, and that the all in one sidebar and other extensions made compatible as well. It renders pretty quickly, doesn't slow down when rendering big pictures and so on. Does Firefox still render those empty table cells or not?

IE8 will suck, just as the rest of the IE versions. I hope Bill Gates soon dies.
I must say I'm sorryI'm forced to use this Windows crap, just because of games and my shitty adsl modem that refuses to work on linux.

Ever since I read on your blog about the memory issues fixed I was excited about it. I thought the memory leaks in flash was an issue with the player not the browser.

I didn't want to download it because most of my awesome add-ons wouldn't work with it.

Does StumbleUpon work on it? That's really the only add on I use often enough to care.

yes it does, even without the Nightly tester tools extension

Even extensions that don't work in Fx3 by default can work with the use of the Nightly Tester Tools toolbar

It should be noted that since this isn't a full release, it will install in addition to your current Firefox installation if you already have Firefox 2 installed.  If this was a full release, it would overwrite your existing one.  If you have both installed, make sure you start Firefox 3 and not 2 ;)

Checking this out. I've got pipelining enabled (powerusing ftw), so now the speed pages load it should totally be dependent on the server I'm connecting to.
I generally don't go for betas, only stable versions, but this looks good.

I use betas a lot but don't recommend them to people unless they're quite reliable.

Well, my kinda-small theme doesn't work with this, nor does Adblock or Foxytunes. But, I'm recovering. I haven't noticed any major changes, but I haven't done too much so far.

For the third time, install the Nightly Tester Tools add-on.  This can make all or almost all of your add-ons work in Firefox 3 ( I used it and all of mine work, I have over 10)

I think the download manager could use a little fixing. The font is a bit too big and I wish there was still the 'clean up' button.

I doubt that firefox will beat opera's rendering speeds. ( http://nontroppo.org/timer/kestrel_tests/ )

I have bad expiriences from using betasoftware for browsers, I'll be sure to test it out once it is released.
