My graphic art.
« on: January 02, 2008, 12:37:55 pm »
I've been interested in graphic art, I was thinking of making it a hobby. I'm a noob at it so tell if these are good or bad. My first attempt was to make a sphere, the white spaces is used for lighting effects making it look like a 3d object, and a bit of shading. My 2nd attempt was my name ;D. I don't think they're too bad.

Haha, yeah, I'm trying hard. Here's one, I made another sphere, but I tried to make a pastel concept.

Check it.

I've been making graphic art and working with graphic design software for quite a while now (4-5 years on and off)

It's not bad for starting out.. you've got some good basic principals and techniques already learnt. However I urge you to try and veer away from any kind of minimalism such as you have already..

Big white spaces are not attractive.

What programs are you using for this? I highly recommend getting Adobe Photoshop (CS1 or higher) and Adobe Illustrator (CS1 or higher). How you get these is entirely up to you.

Also I recommend looking for tutorials on the web on how to do things. This is a fairly good tutorial site.

Also you should learn more about file extensions.. any images with not many colours (i.e less than 32) such as the second image you made can be saved as .gif and will save alot of filesize.

Yeah you need to rethink your shading and highlighting... decide where the light is coming from and shade accordingly.. try looking at real spheres and observing the shadows.

the light corner on the top right and the shadow on the bottom left (in your case) makes the circle look like a sphere. the white stuff makes texture, not make it look sphereical. id say emphasize the light and dark spots, and ad a little shine at the top right. not to shabby for 1st try tho!

Yes, I'm reading tutorials as we speak, but I use GIMP. I'm not into getting it illegally..(although its rather expensive.. :/). I'll try something out.

But real spheres have much more dynamic light and shadow.

Light reflects around a sphere, not just off of one side. Same goes for any rounded objects, though to a lesser degree.

Yeah, I know that now. Right now, I'm trying to read about expert shading, and all the sequences.

Make a better color choice, light purple and baby poo green aren't exactly the best way to display your name.

You managed to get a spherish look on the first image. Though it lacks some detail to make it clear.
These might help:
shading a sphere
shading a cube
shading a cylinder

BTW if you decide to for an application to draw digitally then get Corel Painter IX or X. Photosop is a good choice too but Painter gives that paper/sketching feel. A good tip is to get a tablet pen. Sometimes you even get software when you buy it.
