Soldat, losing popularity? Not as much players as in 1.3.1.
« on: January 17, 2008, 12:16:31 am »
Yeah,  when I first started playing Soldat, I mean like REALLY playing because I knew of it and played it like once a month when 1.2 came out but I just started playing each day in 1.3.1 and then, you could BARELY find a server to play on! like sometimes you'd have to go to INF and if those were full then death match and so on but I rarely couldn't ever find a server to play on but still Soldat WAS VERY popular then, but now I've seen ever since Soldat 1.4 its been REALLY buggy and I think people just gave up after 1.4.1 because now 1.4.2 is almost bug free. So now I see LOTS of servers empty, and when I just recently put up 2 RPG servers NO ONE GET THIS! NO ONE was in 1, I have a simple all gun RPG and a zombie RPG well the zombie is ok but no one ever came in the all guns RPG! its amazing! I really hope Soldat can get back up on its feet after the rough landing with 1.4.

And criticizing? (I've been used to it since I came on this forum)

Just because servers are empty, doesn't mean there are less Soldat players...

Some 1100 players playing atm. Those times... ...times when ASE showed 250 players, in 1.1.5. :)

Maybe it just seems that there are less players because there are more servers.

Aren't bots counted as players, though?  We have a SHITLOAD of zombie servers and whatnot now.

There were more players in 1.3.1, because 1.3.1 was easier to hack. About 1/3 of the players in that said community were hackers.

Well I would rather have my server filled with hackers than with no one at all, MM should just take BE off for more players to come.

There are a lot more servers now then there used to be; there are now 603 1.4.2 servers running at this moment in time. Overall there are 638 Soldat servers running on the TCP lobby, with >2000 players. There are more players, but also more servers, hence the reason why you see empty servers.

PS: BE is a server side option, you can disable it easily.

Soldat definitely isn't losing popularity, it's steadily growing.

So the other admins, who are not attention and popularity whores like you have to handle hackers again? What a gay suggestion is that.

Just because you join crappy servers doesn't mean soldat is dead. And no BE isn't going to be taken away to let hackers back in because unlike you MM can actually use his brain.

I can only speak for what's available within 100ms of my Comcast connection in MD (USA).

There are maybe 2 public, 'normal mode', CTF servers (U13 and Fractured) that aren't private or password controlled.  During the evening (EST), these are almost always completely full.  This frustrates me immensely since I'm not a huge fan of the other game types or mods, and would prefer to not play at over 120ms or so.  That said killing time on a zombie server or playing infiltration gets old after a while.

Incedentally, these servers are also well moderated by the players, as hackers and f*ckwits are consistently bounced out.  So if Soldat is suffering a popularity problem, I'd like to think that the community is not the problem.

My $0.02: Soldat is very popular considering the niche that it fills and the non-flashy experience that it delivers.  It's rare to see something that so relies on gameplay to have such a vibrant community w/o any real marketing what-so-ever.  That said, I think the problem is more on the server side of things.  It's hard to attract players if you don't have a lot of good infrastructure to allow them to casually stroll in and get busy.

It's a tad expensive to run a Soldat server if you don't already have a line on cheap bandwidth.  I looked at the bandwith requirements and it would eat my co-lo alive if I installed it.  Running it over my cable modem is not really an option.  Otherwise, I'd chip in and help the community out by putting up a quality CTF normal mode server.

Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake.  Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big old storm right in the eye and says, "Give me your best shot. I can take it."

More people = More newbs/lags/forum flood with newbie questions...
Soon Soldat will be overpopulated and a squad of veterans with nerves
of steel should be gathered to train the newbs in special servers :D

@Mitak: lol that was funny
@† and Überschall: I wasnt saying to take BE away even you could have enough sense not to do that! Apparently people cant see sarcasm when they see it. And I don't go to any CRAPPY servers i go in my premuim quality servers and thats all I go into, except to see what is going on and what new servers are up.

this is all true.  As the new lobby (the one created for 1.4.0) becomes more stable and has more work done on it, I will be adding more features to track stats over time.

Soldat is growing quite a bit/steadily for sure.

FLAB you don't seem to post much in suggestions.... That would be nice and not letting people waiting.
- Why can't you change the beard color of mr t style (it's only black).
- When is a filter for  "default maps" only going to be added? Because there are to much non-default maps goin around and it's nice to see only defaults.

I don't think soldat is losing popularity it's just because  u r a noob and don't remember how few people played it before 1.2. This graph proves it:
