Not sure if this was done before...
Those of you who love making game movies (with Soldat or otherwise) may be happy to know...
THERE ARE SOME GOOD PROGRAMS OUT THERE to help you.
FRAPs (any recent versions, 1.9D)Possibly the better program out there, but to use it decently, you need to pay 40 bucks for it. Your limited to 30 second clips at half the resolution of the game your recording (imagine Soldat videos... ouch). Yes, you can use this program, and yes, if you have 40 bucks to pay for it... go for it. Features screenshotting, sound recording, and a nice little watermark at the top of your movies...
Get it here.
FRAPs (The first versions)While hard to get your hands on, it is a handy tool. Only downside is the exceptionally large filesize that your movies end up being. No sound recording involved in this version, but who needs sound...Music is better! Search google, or download it from the attachment below...
TaksiFreeware, BSD licenced, and did I mention its FREE? read the
Wiki Page on it. Those of you to lazy to click, the features you get are as follows:
* Live video compression possible with any VFW video codec installed and usable on a Windows system (including but not limited to Xvid, DivX, etc), which can reduce the usually heavy load (associated with video capture) on hard disks.
* Supports user-specified key binding.
* Custom video settings supported and available on a per-game basis.
* Video capture
* Real-time computing
* Screencasting
* Screen capturing, formats available are PNG or 24-bit BMP.
This does have a nasty bite on your system, as it compresses the movie (assuming you play with the settings)
on the fly (kinda like FRAPs, but without the hell raising filesize). Great FRAPs alternative, but no sound capturing (yet, if you read the
website).

New)
CamStudioI can't believe I forgot this one. I have used it before, and its completely free. Video is choppy though (might have been my computer tho). Features are video capturing, and screenshotting...

As of now, those are the only WINDOWS alternatives that I can find. There are a few Linux programs, for those who want to make movies on their linux boxes.
Check out
GLC and
Yukon. I don't know much about these, as I have no linux box, or a need for one. FliesLikeABrick can help you with any of your linux questions, as well as jrgp and a few others.
Have fun, and happy movie making;
