that's certainly a stupid statement.  "look, i might have burned down this hospital, but afterwards they built one twice as big and installed fireproofing. you could say i HELPED the hospital."

Which brings us to another point. Who said that a catastrophic event would hurt the human race? It might help us actually. 2 generations of freaks might produce a superhuman.

...Or we could be burning hospitals.

Yes, but how many people will be Freaks before that happens?
Two generations of how many billion people on earth, that's alot.
You could also say that by burning down said hopsital your actions could of potentially killed hundreds of people that depended on said hospital.

hmm...
Lol, internets.

I'm going to revive this topic to introduce some more information.

I just saw something on the History channel about Solar Maximum. This is the time when the sun is prone to sun spots. For those who don't know, sun spots (if strong enough) have an effect on electronics. The largest recorded was in 1958 and it fucked up some telegraph lines and similar electric/magnetic equipment.

Now... the last solar maximum was in 2001, yes that means the next one will be in 2012. So... um, if zombies are attacking don't bother calling 911. All the satellites will be destroyed.

Wasn't the last one in 2000, and one of the major components of all that Y2k BS?

Oh yeah, didn't it turn out to be nothing remotely serious?

there is only one way the world is going to end, and that wil be mankinds own fault, not by biblical ways, but just by mankind, blowing themselfs and in the end, the world to pieces.

No, I'm pretty sure Y2K was just some tools thinking that the date had a major impact on every electronic device ever made.

Only anime shows I've felt any interest in over the years are Pokemon (original TV series) and various hentai.

People have been saying its the end of the world since the beginning of the rule, as far as I know it's never happened. If you want to sell all your stuff and buy a ton of random crap, get fat, etc. in 2011 or whatever, you can. I won't be though.

Only real threat to humans is peak oil. We're so dependent on cheap oil and no-one wants to do anything about it.

Planet Niburu and all other 2012 bullshit was invented by morons who think that the Mayan calender ends on that date and immediatly take it as a prediction... while it actually does continue. It's just the end of one cycle and beginning of another. There's no proof that the Mayan thought 2012 would be the end of the world.

2012 could be a self fulfilling prophecy... (ie someone takes it upon themselves to end the world, rather than allowing nature to do it's thing or not.)

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a bunch of wacko's running around blowing things up. Mass suicide is pretty much certain to happen. It happened on 31st Dec 1999, so it'll probably happen again.

Hell... if the oil companies wanted the world to end they could do it easily... just halt all shipments and double the price of oil and suddenly everybody and their mother will be panic-buying the stuff along with food and water in preparation for a potential Mad Max style scenario. (tragic but awesome in my opinion)

Self-fulfilling prophecy, aye. People will belive anything these days, especially the ultra-religious nuts. It's also kinda sad how our world revolves around oil. Lose that, and we're phuck'd.
To sum up my point: We had a multipage debate about toilet padding. (Putting TP in the water so you don't get splashed.)
And we still don't know if dead guys can keep a stiffy.

Now really, I doubt that it will be the end of the world.

In all reality, how could an ancient civilization predict the end of the world when they could even predict their own demise?
Calenders are confusing as hell sometimes, I'm not going to put my faith in some stupid old calender made by an extinct race of people.
And if i'm wrong well that's tough because i'll eat those words, it's a pity we'll all be dead anyway.

I'm almost positive that sunspots played a major role in the hype, though.
