Ping option
« on: January 20, 2008, 02:39:27 pm »
My suggestion:
When you click 'request servers' button, only the servers that are 'green' will allow you to join.
-------
Servers
-------
To make this fully work, server hosters will have an option to have this function work for their server(s).
They will also get to choose what is the highest ping they can join at.
This in NO way will allow players for being able to uncheck the option.
It will only allow them to join if they are, again, under the ping limit.
------------
How it works
------------
As a player hits the 'request servers' button, only servers that show the 'green dot' next to it(or 141~ ping) will allow them to join.
But how is this done?
Well click the 'filter' button, and there will be a new option named Ping there.
This will always be checked, and players won't be able to uncheck this option.
But to make it fair, the option can be unchecked if they have a registered version.
But not only do they need a registered version, they must pay an additional price to have this option unchecked.
-----
Price
-----
To get this option available for you, you will pay an addition price.
I haven't thought of a price, but either $5, or the price of the current registered version will be issued.
As when you buy a Registered version, this will only be a 1 time fee.
--------
Benefits
--------
As to all things, there are positives and negatives.
Players, who are able to join the server they want, will no longer have to truly play against a "lagger".
When they do see an increase in the number of laggers, they will know that they spent money for that option.
This money will then be used to benefit every single person.
But how will it be benefiting us all, you may be asking.
With an increased amount of money, we will have better updates, and better protection against things.

If I didn't touch on an issue that could be affected by this, please tell me.
Comments are welcome :)
To all the people who WILL flame upon me posting this, don't do this here.
PM me or meet me in a game and we can have a whole hour dedicated too you.

What about if people want to play with another person from the other side of the world?  You're effectively saying that these people can't play together unless they register the game.

Hosters would have an option to allow or not allow this.
Small way to let them play together.
Even if players across the world can play together, what stops them from getting ping kicked?

On top of that, there are different ways for people to contact eachother.
But please, tell me what is wrong with wanting people to register for a game they like?

Thanks for the comments :)

I read the first sentence and said no.

Alot of the "special" Servers aren't in my green ping range Such as hexer, Tw, Cs and a few really good Ctf servers.
Sure i lag a little, but it only gets bad come the end of the month and no one seems to bitch at me for lagging a little.
So just no, Not even if you propose registering lets you play beyond a green ping.
Just no sorry.

And after reading through your "Proposal" "You would effectively never play against a lagger ever again."
Yes, you would, If they paid the registration fee, That doesn't make their hunk of wood computer any better, So they would be paying money to play a horribly laggy game which wouldn't be fun.
And It would still lag, They would just be out of pocket.

And MM was never in it for the money, he isn't building Link-Dead and beserker because they are get rich schemes, he made them because he likes to make games about blood and gore, that's his past time, his hobby.
So even with out this, there will still be updates and such, Money doesn't always speed up the process and if you do something fast, You most likely will ruin it.(This can be used on a whole lot of levels, Think about it)

So My answer is no, sorry.
Lol, internets.

THe green/orange/red limit is wrong.
There shuld be <insertmaxpinghere> for people when they want to join a server, so it could be set to 400 or 100 or w/e

Truly, never said you wouldn't see another lagger.
Only something to decrease the current amount of them.

Also, like I have said before, hosters will have the choice of this being enabled/disabled.

Pie, thanks for repeating yourself tons. I'm sure everyone now gets your stance is no :)
Plus there is a WHOLE different alternative to this.

You said it, just in a different context.
Not to mention you would completely cripple soldat as a multiplayer game, People play soldat because it's free and they get the OMFPS in the one shebang.
And it's pretty much a waste of time to code into it.

Eh, I guess I did forget to mention that.

Another option, would have all ping warnings on a server lowered.
Seems...less time consuming.

Which can be done in the soldat.ini i'm pretty sure.
MAXPING= # (Where # is the amount of ping before being kicked)
(Which is set to 1000 By default i think)

I don't see why people say lag is a problem in Soldat. I've played Soldat with 300 ping and i've played it with 20.. the only difference is that the people jult around a just jitter, it isnt any harder or easier to hit people if you just aim over their head i mean its a 2D shooter not a 3D FPS online game. Plus considering all the people around to world, country to country they would have in the yellow mabye....
so no.

So your saying, if a guy from china wants to play soldat but he couldn't find a server in his country, he would have to find a server thats close to china, but the closest country would have to be russia, but with chinas crappy internet he gets 500+ ping which means he can't play soldat, even in the nearest server?

Then please, fill me in on any other ideas on how this would all go away.

Pie, yes it can be changed there. Perhaps, by default, it is lowered.

As said before you can set a max ping and you can also set how many times someone can exceed the max ping limit before they get a 15-minute ping kick.
