Haters in gather
« on: January 20, 2008, 09:49:44 pm »
OK, I have been playing on publics for a while. I'm still not great, but I have been told several times that I needed to go play on gathers to get better. So I did. I went to #sna.gather and joined a game. I wound up being chosen as one of the captains, and I chose my team, and away we went. So I get into the game, and someone restarts like twenty times. Then I start playing and these two guys start getting mad at me because I am bad...I already know that. Told me I should go back to publics and not play in gathers. Then everybody left.

I am p1$$ed about it, even though they are right and I don't know what I am doing. So far the community has been nothing but helpful, but this was flaming without constructive criticism.

Have any of you had similar experiences?

Also, should I go back to gathers?

I have lol.

Its your choice, if you want to go back, and get criticized more-just ignore them.
Its your decision

Who were you playing with, if I may ask?

Screw em man, a good way to get by is get some "pro" friends and people wont bother you. A lot of people just like to pick on new people, its kind of like a retarded frat house. Just ignore them and keep playing, I was a joke when I started gathers, but I knew people so most people didn't bother me.

Remember though: No matter how good you are, you will still be a noob in someone's eyes, even the super pros get made fun of for having bad games.

@Eagles_Arrows

Ummmm...

Some guy named Ichiro was the main one...there was another with a Japaneseish name. The other guys were fine -- they just left when there were no more people. One of em was standing up for me :-)

@Rai-Dei: There were a couple guys that I have seen around forums, but none that I have been friendly with. You and KorruptMerc and Cappy and a few others have been friendly, but none of y'all were on there.

EDIT: It was me, Ichiro, and SemperFi on Bravo; ricr, Hoyin, and ley|afk on Alpha. At least originally -- I think the teams changed.

You can get good in pubs. I did. Only bad thing about pubs is the lack of teamwork. Play in pubs until you can aim pretty well, then try gathers again. And get those nade skills up. You really need em. ;)

When you start gathers, people are going to give you shi*. Your going to lose. Your going to come last in the server many times over. Well at least that's what happened to me  [pigtail].

You will improve overtime, just keep playing them, but be prepared for defeat. This will make you stronger. Your playing soldat at the highest level against some of the best players in the game..

If you take those curses seriously, here is my advice, though mentioned already: play regularly on a good public server, with active community (in my case i  play only on Leo's INF and sometimes CTF). If you play constantly, others will remember you (not all, but the ones, who also play there constantly). If you play good on that public, you will......earn.....emm lets say a particular "respect" from them. And just ask, that you want to try gather with them, or maybe even they will offer you to join. I'm sure, that they will understand your skills from public server and will not talk feck. So you will have a chance to play gather...again..and again...you will become better on them..and thats it: no more curses on you due to your skills.  ;) I was offered to join gathers several times, though i rejected those offers. Probably i felt, that i won't do any good there and public is enough for me, though maybe i would like to try and see what gathers are.  ::)

I do publics a LOT, but I just started on gathers.

Got on there the other night and Rai-Dei was on there. I played a game with him, he gave me some tips, then he asked me into his and s4r's training clan.

I will mos def keep training on pubs though.

I got told the same thing when I was new to soldat. I remember I was in my first clan [NoS] and my leader [NoS] Dizzy told me about gathers, so I tried em out and I got told to play against bots/or play on pubs...and that was the last time I played a gather. :P I'm still on sna.gather every once in a while, but mainly to idle. I guess just play on pubs a little bit longer, and when you think you're ready you can go back.

There's not much you can do about it, except ignore it and keep playing.  Most people in gathers don't mind much about having bad players on their teams, but there will always be people who will make fun of those worse then them.  But of course this is found in pubs too, everywhere in fact.

If you really are adamant about becoming better, keep with the gathers.  They will help you, a lot.  Just try to ignore the hatred, and don't start anything.  Because I guarantee, if you do, it probably won't end well.  Just keep playing and you will get better, that's all there is to it.  Also R7 is still thinking about training new players, once SCTFL is over.

No point in playing a gather if you're getting killed to fast to actually get any good practice. Get good at pubs first, then take the next step.

As a pubweller I feel almost hypocritical saying that last part.
I attend grammar school, last grade, and ignorance is all around me. Well, good for them. Ignorance is bliss.

Actually, gathers will help anyone get good. I remember when I started gathering, I was a great pubber but I would get face raped in gathers. After awhile I started being able to hold my own, now I am a perfectly capable gatherer. Being constantly owned makes you try harder, making you better.

Totally fricking agreed.

It's a major reason to get better.

Gathers help, no doubt.... But you don't need them to get better.

No, but being totally owned is a good incentive. And in pubs you are much less likely to have that.

Hehe, interestingly enough the main guys who bashed you were euros - and to some players, they are bashable noobs aswell.

Like said above, don't give up, make some friends and soon enough you can start putting your grenades up the haters' noses. (:

I just shot them to death with my ruger.

Ichiro started shouting at me pretty much right after I two-hit-killed him a couple times. :-))

I wish I was able to play Gathers without lag... since I'm in Australia and Gathers are American (I think) I have over 200 ping. D:!

And yes, everyone usually gets better by playing with people who are better than them.
