Microsoft to buy Yahoo
« on: February 01, 2008, 09:51:20 pm »
Microsoft has just made an offer to buy Yahoo

If this offer goes ahead, (i doubt), it should be interesting to see what direction Yahoo will head in.

Because it's big. Not that big, but it may serve the purpose for getting onto google. They buy yahoo, pump some money into it and let it grow until it's competetive.

I wonder why they don't cut the crap and just buy Google instead of claiming the lesser search engine.

Microsoft might be hoping to turn it around, but I don't think they can. Google would never sell, look at it's stock.

Bill Gates was smart enough to design a system that was user-friendly enough for everyone to like.  Also most programs are compatible with it and is a reason why it is the most used OS.

I find it funny how Microsoft tends to always try to buy its competitors and surroundings.

They cut a deal with Facebook to beat google in to it.

And that's why they don;t have as much competition, they buy it out. Which works out, cause then the competetion has less to compete with, and Microsoft always pays VERY well. I know a guy who worked for microsoft from when he was 22 and he retired at 37. They pay that well.

Microsoft tried to get into web services/search/advertising, and they're not doing so well at it.  They want to buy Yahoo to supplement their fledgling search/advertising services, because Yahoo is better than them at it, but MS can't afford to go after Google.

Yahoo's mail really, really sucks.  Microsoft's Live/Hotmail mail is a bit worse.  I really would hate to have them consume Yahoo and make Yahoo's mail even worse.  I can post details about why they both suck, but lets leave it at "They both have very stupid anti-spam practices that violate standards and they ignore the little guy.  It is impossible for mail administrators to work with them to correct problems stemming from their over-agressive and standards-breaking mail filtering"

From a business point of view, this is really funny.  If Yahoo accepts the bid/offer, that's $44B that MS just dumped into this.  I can't see this ever being a profitable move for Microsoft, as in I can't see them making their money back.  I can understand it from a "we want more market share" point of view... but the numbers just don't work out and make it seem profitable besides that.

There is no official report, only rumors from people "close to Yahoo".  It is expected that Yahoo will officially decline the offer on Monday.

I believe Microsoft have actually finished buying all of the large companies and are now moving on to all of the smaller ones.

What they really want to do is buy Yahoo so that they can be more affiliated with Google.

Thing is... nobody actually cares about Yahoo. Just the same way that nobody cares about AOL.

"Affiliated with google" ??

Yahoo, Microsoft, and Google are all competitors.

Yahoo is not a small company.  Microsoft has never made an acquisition over $6B.  Their others were nowhere close to that

Yahoo is by far the largest company they've ever tried to buy out.

Get your facts straight.

I think he meant to say something along the lines of...

And to that I say...
duh.
