Blurry ?
« on: February 02, 2008, 01:16:53 am »
My maps always seem to look a little bit.. blurry.
Not like really blurry, but.. a little bit.
Looks fine in polyworks, but in the game, it seems blurry
and sometimes I feel like the whole map is shaking :S
But that might be because I'm crazy, I dunno.

But yeah, the blurriness.
It's weird.
Anyone know what I'm talking about, or why it happens?

You could better our chances of understanding your situation by posting screenshots of the blurry maps in both ingame and in polyworks and the actual maps themselves so we can examine them.

What are your computer's specs? Maybe it isn't modern enough to play Soldat smoothly. (which I doubt)
There are other worlds than these

Ok, the top picture is PolyWorks, the bottom picture is in game.

And it's not my computer, because my friend mentioned the blurriness of my maps too.
That and the bounciness..  and nades go through walls (like the roofs of the bunkers in these screenshots)
Which are also issues I can't seem to fix.

Soldat seems to do the same for me as well.  I don't think there is a solution to this and I think it is related to graphics cards.  For me running a nVidia TNT2 Pro Card, I see blurriness, for school computers that use Intel Extreme, everything looks smooth as you would see it in PolyWorks.

For nades going through the walls, I think that it is caused by not having the polygon thick enough.  You can enlarge it and make it thicker.  If that's not the case, its probably a polygon bug.  You can find some tutorials in the same board on how to remove or fix them.

I guess older graphics cards don't have problems with this. I run an Nvidia mx400 (which is series 2 :-\) and it runs nice and smooth. This one I'm on right now runs an Nvidia 6800 something or other, so I'll test it out and tell my results.

Just a question, whats your Desktop Resolution vs Game Resolution.
And whats your desktop vs Game bitrate? Just outta curiosity. Also, are you running it fullscreeen? Cause If you have an LCD monitor they chop up the image cause they generally have a way higher res than the game does fullscreen.

Ehm... It's just the edge of the polygons...
You can remove it using a texture that has a 1x1 lime green dot.

Extract and put the folder in your Soldat folder.

What a problem....

In your config, do you have the window size % changed at all? That may be what the problem is. I dunno, the Nvidia GeForce 6800 card thing didn't have any problems with this. At least no seeable blurriness. Um...well good luck with this.

My Desktop resolution is 1024 x 768 , and my In Game resolution is 800x600, I don't play in fullscreen, and I don't have a fancypants LCD monitor.

I did that, and it made it look a bit better, but it's still blurry. It's not just the edges, if you compare those two screenshots I put up, you can see that the actual texture itself is blurred too.

Don't know if this is useful information or not, but my graphics card is Nvidia GeForce FX 5200

Try playing in 640x480. I know its crap but that's the traditional size. It probably won't make a single difference though since it's resolution.

Don't forget that after it's compiled and rendered, some sacrifices have to be made to keep it smaller. Try asking ANNA what gets nerfed (if anything) when it gets compiled, since you're using PW. I have noticed though, that any map in soldat has a certain amount of "fuzz" to it, but a lot of MM's disguise it with more sceneries.

Niko is right, textures usually have an edge file (textures/edges I think) that is basically a very thin image that is stretched to fit the edges of the textures. Some of them are just ugly, but I think they make your map look nice.

In the future it would be cool to have a way to decide which polys have an edge and which dont... but it wont happen.

Yeah, I did what he said and made it a lime green dot. It got rid of the edge, and it looks better, but if you look at the screenshots, its not just the edge thats blurry, its everything.

See the difference?
Look how much sharper the one on the left looks compared to the right.
Not just the edges, look at the middle of the texture too.

I think it is related to how you configured the graphics in the setup.  I used to have this problem, somehow, it disappeared.  Last thing I remembered was changing my settings.  Try that to see if it changes anything.

1. turn off poly edges if you so desire.
2. set soldat's resolution to 640x480. if you have an LCD monitor turn off fullscreen. if you have a CRT, keep fullscreen on.

that's the best i can do.

If it were, bd, both screenshots he showed us would look fine. It's graphical.

Does the blur happen only on this map, or do others suffer the same problem? I know that the game tends to put less into graphics to save fps sometimes, but I haven't gotten anything like that before.
To sum up my point: We had a multipage debate about toilet padding. (Putting TP in the water so you don't get splashed.)
And we still don't know if dead guys can keep a stiffy.
