What is wrong with religion?

Thread launchpad...

Yep that's right. Humanity is a failure. But lets look at one of the major reasons why:

Yeah, you guessed it. ::) Religion.

1. Almost all religions 'teach' their followers that there is an afterlife, and so their followers take this life and this planet for granted because they are under the belief that there is an eternal paradise waiting for them.

2. Some religions (namely Christianity and Islam) teach their followers that "everything is Gods will" and so people feel that what is happening to the world is supposed to happen or that they have no choice in what will happen.

3. There are even some religious figures (particularly in American Christianity) who tell everybody that Global Warming isn't real and that people shouldn't "inconvenience" themselves with trying to preserve the planet when it's all ready being preserved by God.

4. There are prominent Doomsday cults all over the world who believe that they are supposed to enforce an apocalyptic prophecy and are preparing, as you read this, to try and end the world because they believe that is their purpose. Needless to say that on Dec 21 2012 you are going to want to stay as far away from these people as possible. Imagine if they had access to nuclear weaponry.

So yeah... If you want to blame anything other than selfish industry or selfish governments... blame religions and selfish religious people.

Well I'm actually very intellectually superior and therefore I think and speak/type at the same time.

It saves me having to sit on my butt for 10 minutes prior twiddling my thumbs and staring at the ceiling waiting for some sort of epiphany to hit me before I can even begin typing.

Also I just give my honest opinion instead of trying to kiss as much arse as possible so that people don't flame me.

*You are more superior than whom/ what?
*You can't be very superior, you can be very big, intelligent or cool, but not very superior, because superior is a comparative.

As for:

What is wrong with religion?

Thread launchpad...

The answer is right here:

I say what I think.

Humanity = Fail.
Religion = Fail.
America = Fail.

End of discussion.  :P

and here:

Yep that's right. Humanity is a failure. But lets look at one of the major reasons why:

And about the main topic:

You are going to die anyway so why should we give a damn about humanity and whatnot when we can just go have sex, entertain ourselves or just enjoy our lives. Let some religious cock-shaft deal with the shazm of the universe.

1. Almost all religions 'teach' their followers that there is an afterlife, and so their followers take this life and this planet for granted because they are under the belief that there is an eternal paradise waiting for them.

Christians and Muslims believe that hey are held accountable for their deeds upon resurrection. The main theme of Christianity is love. Christians aren't truly being loving and caring towards their fellow humans when they destroy nature, ruining their planet for them are they?

  Hindu's, Buddhists, and Sikh's all believe in continual reincarnation until liberation is reached. Many of the Asian religions feel deeply connected to nature, and are charged with respect for it.

2. Some religions (namely Christianity and Islam) teach their followers that "everything is Gods will" and so people feel that what is happening to the world is supposed to happen or that they have no choice in what will happen.

Humans have free will to do what the like, but here is a better resource:

http://www.gotquestions.org/Gods-will.html

3. There are even some religious figures (particularly in American Christianity) who tell everybody that Global Warming isn't real and that people shouldn't "inconvenience" themselves with trying to preserve the planet when it's all ready being preserved by God.

People can warp and distort things beyond recognition, the true meaning of Christianity is to love. Calling out fanatics is like pointing out racial stereotypes, inaccurately and pointless to do.

The fanatics thing applies here to. Cults like these are not even religions by definition. A religion gives a faith answer to an ultimate question. When the world will end is not a ultimate question.

So yeah... If you want to blame anything other than selfish industry or selfish governments... blame religions and selfish religious people.

Would I be correct in saying blame anything good that happens in the world on religion? No. You are also pointing out insanely specific examples and then making a broad generalization based on these examples.

ask around...
"what if earth explodes tomorrow?" - Oh my god that would suck
"what if earth explodes 300 years from now?" - Who cares? we'll be dead by then...

I'll play devil's advocate here for a moment. Can you give me a good, logical reason why we should care about the future of the world? By this I mean can you justify caring about what will happen after you die without using emotion or "humanity" as an explanation? Why is it bad to be a parasite?

Hehe.... I don't care that I'm a parasite... not at all... all I do is hope I don't burn in hell for that... I just hope there's no afterlife. I never said parasites are bad....
We, as parasites, are bad for other species... but that's the thing.. I don't care about other species...

{SHORTENED}

I won't particularly defend religion, but Mangled does go a bit far and is unrealistic in his hate for it.

Armed with hardly extensive knowledge of most religions, I choose physics as my religion, because I am a simple man who enjoys seeing immediate results and likes explanation to come coupled with proof. Smite me, for I appreciate not the deep and "incomprehensible" ways of pondering the purpose of my own existence or attempting to find love in just about everything that surrounds me. If that sort of thing tickles your fancy, then that is your place, and absolutely nothing is wrong with that. However, I don't oppose your views and I expect you not to oppose mine. This is my basic opinion.

It is not humanity that is a failure. In fact, humanity is blessed with the slight ability to change the environment and conditions to suit its needs rather than the other way around. It is civilization that provides the circumstances for humans to take that ability too far. The act of joining forces with other humans for survival -- the war against nature -- is what makes us "corrupt."

I see religion on a similar level as you. You might not have known from my post defending religion, but I am an atheist. I have nothing but the deepest respect for religion, I love the concept of believing in a universal love. I just choose to not to believe in a God, but hope for the goodness that Religion calls for; and like you stated, thats my call.

Your post did seem like an anomaly for someone jumping to defend religion. You didn't seem very tied to the concept of God. Almost as if you're lacking loyalty towards any particular religion.

Secondly, I wasn't aiming my response directly at you. It was more of a general statement, but I'm glad to see that it applied to you. I must say, the way you perceive religion is definitely one of the most interesting views I have ever observed. Generally, people's opinions on religion are at least mildly extreme, whereas you seem to have reached a compromise between "you can't tell me what to believe" and "God will make our world better."

I, much like yourself, belong to no established religion, despite the fact that I may share some very specific values as a variety of religions.

Edit: I find it pretty pathetic that as soon as someone builds up enough emotion and comfort to project an opinion, despite what may have influenced its existence, he is forced to disregard it as "stupid emotion" and revert back to the mask that he has built for himself ever since he was introduced to society. In all honesty, anyone who manages to achieve the amazing feat of comfortably projecting any thoughts and emotions to the certain asshats in this place deserves my respect.

Right, but where would rocks be without humans to study them?

Only anime shows I've felt any interest in over the years are Pokemon (original TV series) and various hentai.

They'd be exactly how they are now. They are probably better off without us as if we werent here, no rock would have been smashed up against a wall, moved to some lab to be tested and studied, nor suffer the beatings from a caveman as he attempted to make the first wheel...

I think to discuss Mangled*'s bollocksty views on religion, we must turn to the wise lyrics of linkin park.
I quote, from the song breaking the habit:
"I don't know why I instigate, to say what I don't mean."
This WHOLLY PROVES that Mangled is actually not thinking properly, and we SOLDIERS OF THE INTERNET need to save this poor Mangled soul and fix him.
One could also citate, from the song, in the end, as I have before:
"In the end, it doesn't even matter."
This again, this FULLY TRUE STATEMENT proves that we should not care about humanity, family friends and going deeper we MUST go to the religion of SCIENTOLOGY. This being the study of TRUTH and the TRUTH in the LINKIN PARK SONGS.

I would go further with this joke but i cba
