A new computer
« on: February 12, 2008, 03:08:40 pm »
My current computer has 128 megs of RAM and is seven years old so I decided to get a new one. These are the parts I was going to buy:

Seagate Barracuda ES 250GB SATA II harddrive, 16MB buffer, 7200rpm, 73.90 €
Antec NSK6580-EC New Solution Series case with EarthWatts 430 watt power supply, 88.90 €
Sapphire Radeon HD 2900 Pro 512MB -display adapter, PCI-E, 162.90
Kingston HyperX 2GB (2 x 1GB) 800MHZ DDR2 DIMM CL5 NON-ECC (5-5-5-15), 62.90 €
LG GSA-H55LRB burning DVD+-RW-drive, black, ATAPI/IDE, 35.90 €
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 -processor, boxed, frequency 2.66GHz FSB 1333 MHz 161.90 €
Intel DP35DP Socket 775 FSB 1333 motherboard Intel 775 LGA 775, 101.90 €

Computer unit: 688.30 €

Logitech G5 Laser Mouse, 64.90 €
Logitech G11 keyboard, 56.90 €
Creative I-Trigue 2200 16 watt 2.0 stereo speakers, 54.90 €
ViewSonic VA903B 19" TFT 8ms, 181.15 €

Other stuff: 357.85 €

Overall: 1046.15 €

And that's that. I was just wondering if all the parts are complatible? Does it have enough kick to play, say, Blood Money well? Are the parts of good quality? And again, are they compatible with each other? Anything else I should know?

I doubt he wants the sound of a jet engine coming from under his desk.

You can get a faster CPU for basically the same money. Look at the E6750.
Definitely try putting together your computer at different online shops and see where it costs less. Use price comparison sites.

Edit: Same goes for the hard drive. The step from 250GB to 500GB is just a few euros right now.

7200rpm is enough. I would also just like Flies suggest that you get a slightly better CPU. Maybe if you are able get an other unit of the GPU and use crossfire as the GPU you mentioned is somewhat cheap.

BTW get some good cooling and a good PSU.

Alright, I upgraded the processor. I know the pros of 10 000 RPM hard drives but they're cost and they don't have much capacity.

Also, the case has 1 rear 120mm TriCool™ 3-speed fan, 2 front mounts for optional 92mm fans, 1 Advanced Chassis Air Guide, with mount for optional 80mm fan and a VGA vent, whatever that is. Is that one fan enough or should I buy more? Also, is the power supply of 430 watts that comes with the case enough?

stock is fine if you don't do overclocking.

You should look at the Geforce 8800gt, shouldn't be much more than your 2900 pro and it will perform much better.

This was my computer that I bought a little over a month ago(all prices in CAD); compare to your own:

Seagate 160MB Drive: $59.95
Seagate 750MB drive: $204.95
Intel E6850 @ 3ghz: $294.95
LG Sata DVD Burner: $42.95
Windows XP Pro: $129.95
Crucial BallistiX 2GB PC2-8500 Ram(2x1GB): $99.95
Asus P5K: $134.95
Microsoft Habu Gaming Mouse: $59.95
Saitek Eclipse Keyboard: $39.95
PC Power & Cooling 750W PSU: $169.95
Cooler Master Elite 330 Case: $49.95
Samsung 22" monitor: $299.95
EVGA 8800GT 512MB: $251.98 (includes $1.99 shipping)
======================
Subtotal: 1861.38 (includes $12 environmental fee for monitor)
Taxes: $95.59
Total: $1956.97 (1,340.29 EUR)

Your selection to date looks to be decent at any rate. Just remember not to forget to take taxes into account when pricing out a computer; I assume since you use Euro's that you probably have to pay VAT.

newegg doesn't even have it.  the 2900 is a poor design anyways, basically a stripped down xt.

NO for 2900-series, a BIG NO! Get Nvidia, Get 8800GT if you anyway can. If you want ATI, get HD3870 OR a bit slower and cheaper HD3850. HD3850 is best for the price, best "bang for the buck", as Americans tend to say, I suppose.

What about overclocking? Are you into it?

Fluffy, were are you getting your prices from? Newegg is way cheaper on conversion.

2900xt was supposed to be ATi's flagship card.  it's faster than the 8800GTS which was nVidia's performance model at the time.  It was overpowered by both the GTX and the Ultra, while running hotter and drawing more power.   And we're talking about the pro here, which is even worse.

The newer HD38xx series delivers the same/better performance, runs cooler, draws less power and costs less.  If you're going to go ATi (AMD whatever), go 38xx

Well jee, most people compare the cards that cost the same and released at the same time, rather than wait a few months and then scoff them because a new card came around.

You're gonna want a 'decent' PSU ...one between $100-200 i'd imagine over there. Don't buy that cheap shit. A bad PSU'll cost you in the long run, guaranteed.

Quite much any ATX 2.3 complitant PSU will so, as long as it isn't the bottom-line quality. So be sure to read some reviews first!

No, it wasn't. HD29x-series never was supposed to be flagship/high-end. The last Flagship card was X1900XTX, before HD3870X2.

Nvidia does not really compete with Ultra/GTX anymore, because they have G92 (GTS) chip, which is their "next-gen" for now at least (Will be used in POSSIBLE 9800GT/GTX, and will be used in 9800 GX2.) Right now they compete with 8800GT/GTS512. Ultras are not manufactured anymore, and probably neither are GTX's, AFAIK.

If the current card isn't enough then I'll get a Club 3D Radeon HD3870 512MB, pre-overclocked, 206.90 €. Here's the technical stuff:

    * ATI Radeon HD3870 circuitry
    * 512MB GDDR4 memory
    * PCI-E
    * RAMDAC 400MHz
    * Frequency (Engine) 800MHz
    * Frequency (Memory) 2.34GHz
    * 2x DVI, S-Video out
    * CrossFire support
    * DirectX 10.1 support
    * HDCP
