CD vs USB

So, we have some people here that use usb.. and some that use cds.

So what do you prefer? Are you a usb user? Or a heavy cd user?

And what do you main use your usb/cds for?

I'm just going to assume by "USB" you mean "USB mass storage devices" like flash drives.

If so, what kind of question isĀ  that?

CD+DVD for archival / stuff you want to keep or give to someone. USB stick for temporary stuff or things you need while on the go.

To somehow answer your question: I have more than 600 GB worth of data on CDs and DVDs and this one 2 GB USB stick which tends to come in handy.

But generally speaking, I like USB flash drives much better than CDs, as I'm normally so paranoid about getting a mark on the CDs, where as you can treat a USB like s*** and it'll still stay uncorrupted.

Are you talking about data storage or media devices?

For temporary data storage I use a flash drive for backing stuff up and transferring data between machines, more reusable than CD's. For permanent then CD's all the way.

For media (music in this case) I tend to use my CD player more than my MP3 player. (in case this was the question you were actually asking)

I barely use cds at all, since a usb is usually larger than a cd, and it takes less time to write.

I choose cuboid storage over circlular storage for speed, simplicity and the ability to seed through the interwebs. And I don't want my computer's circle reader buzzing while I play a movie.

Anything I download or make myself, that I want to keep.
Your hard drive crashes, your 500 GB of stuff is most likely gone.
So far every single CD and DVD could be read again and some are 7 years old now.

It's really your choice though. The stuff it doesn't make sense to burn to CD/DVD, but still find important, I back up across 2 hard drives.

Guys.. I have a question. I downloaded an ISO image from the net. While I was downloading it, on Mozilla FireFox, I saw it had a ".iso", but the icon was winrar. Can I burn it on a cd? Or do I extract then burn?

iso is a cd image, for it to work as anything more then a data cd (Ubuntu live cd for example) you need to burn it.

I use MagicIso wich can extract ISO files to your computer. You can also mount files using magicISO or the more popular (and free) Daemon tools. Mounting the ISO to it would be just like popping the cd in your drive.

Yeah I use MagicISO for mounting CD's and MagicDisc for mounting virtual drives

USB for the win.  It cannot be scratched or damaged easily.  It writes files to the unit and reads them very quickly.  And its compact and saves storage space.

Depends, I only use CD for long-term archiving or as backups, but normally I stick with a USB drive [or an external].
