Back-up waypoints are there for when you think the bot may go off track of the main-path waypoints. It keeps a bot on track.

As far as the guide explains, you do not need back-up waypoints for bots who are bunny-hopping(i think thats how he refers to it in the guide).

Back-up waypoints are really only necessary when a bot is jetting, so after you make your main path, take the 'vertex selection tool' and highlight the waypoint right before the bot takes off to jet. Make a second path that follows along side the 'main path', and connect the 'back-up path' with the last waypoint in the 'flying sequence'. Make about 2 back-up paths. Hopefully, I made that simple enough to understand.

in other words, alternate paths to keep the bot away from the harmful polies, that makes sense

in other words, to make sure the bot doesnt randomly fly off somewhere. When you first try out your waypoints, you'll know what im talking about and it will all make sense.
