Halo 2 style melee attack
« on: June 09, 2006, 12:54:57 pm »
Currently, melee combat is almost NEVER used! Soldat would be a better game if fist combat were more like sword combat in Halo 2: With the push of a button, the player charges into the direction that the mouse is pointed to and if an enemy happened to be within the attacker's path, he gets damaged and pushed into the direction of the punch. This attack should deal about 20% damage as it is a rather powerful attack. The attack should cover a distance of about 2.5 times the height of a soldier. After execution, the player would remain standing and immobile for about a second.
Further, this move could come useful when trying to attain a last second boost toward any given direction like a last resort kind of thing. ie: your running with flag toward your base while being chased. You have low health and are ALMOST at your flag. You use this attack to make your last effort to reach your flag and you do so just before getting killed.

Melee attacks will be useless in Soldat! It's too fast paced, the person who is charging would be killed.

and there's something about this idea that just.. Doesn't seem right. I'm thinking the 20% damage and the immobiity part.

fists are good enough

I agree with Bond.

Soldat's not 3D, Halo elements will most likely not work. The dude's gonna get OWN3D when he rushes.

people would be boosting around all the time in ctf. I like melee combat as it is. you can sort of leap at someone with the chainsaw

bond, it's just as hard to punch someone with this as it is to get someone with the chainsaw.  Your "soldat's too fast paced" arguement is not valid.
Psycho, like i said, you will become immobil for a short while in such a way that if you try to only boost your way through a map, you'll actually be slower than when you run through it.  Again, arguement invalid.

I don't understand how this would be much different than rushing somebody with a chainsaw. I also find it weird that a fist attack would do more damage than, say, a steyr bullet. I can't say I'd see this being used much, even for capping the flag.

well, you don't need a chainsaw to do this attack - that's how it's different.  when you're all out of guns, you just drop your weapons and start ramming the enemy (if you can)...

this isnt a really close melee kind of game, when the soldat is about a mm tall and you can walk through other soldats there isnt really much need for melee

I don't think the idea that it's weaponless is why people are rejecting it; it's just the idea of the sudden rush towards an enemy when one's close enough. That's the exact same thing as a gravityless, less-skilled Knife (and even much less-skilled as you can use it while unarmed).

A last-ditch boost towards your home flag is kinda cheap, IMO... that's probably just me, tho'.

With that, I just realized that if this idea was implemented... Soldat would look a lot like Gunz.

but like i said, boosting the entire way isn't faster than running!  you should really learn to read bjb.  In Gunz, it does make you faster...

I think the reason it is not accepted, is because people would rather: 1. kill an opponent with a gun or 2. kill an opponent with a 1 hit secondary. Why waste time with melee that takes multiple hits to kill when you can knife/saw someone for the instant kill? Any skilled player would kill someone with ease that tryed to punch them and then froze for a second.
Your acting like your having a duel and your opponent gets a pistol and you get a spork.
Isn't that pretty much what it is? I dunno wtf a spork is, I suppose it's way weaker than the pistol since you compared that to this.

Swords aren't meant for killing? Let me show you a time called the Medieval Ages, bro.

It's a good premise, and would be fun to use/execute, but I doubt it would work all that well.

Punch should remain a simple attack as it is now. Maybe it could deal a little more damage but that is all.

2.5 times the soldat's height is just ridicilously too long.

Then whats the whole point about boosting? To me, it would just screw the game up and it makes something, AS SIMPLE AS PUNCH, way too complicated

A punch already kills in 2-3 hits. This would just make punching worse.

I'd say just add some kind of jet lunge. So you can fly faster yet lose your fuel pretty fast.

well then what's the point of punching...  Actually my main problem is that punching is so instantaneous that it's so close to impossible to punch someone.  It would be good enough for me if the time frame can be extended during which someone can get hurt when I click to punch.

Punching is almost impossible because Soldat isn't a melee attack game. Punching is only in the game so if you don't have a weapon you're not completely defenseless.

Plus, it should only take around 10 seconds or less to find another gun lying around if you've lost yours somehow. Pretty much, punching is for disarming only, and that's only if you happen to be beside the guy you're trying to kill.

What's easier, lunging at someone or shooting them in the head?

my point is so friggin simple!  Since punching exists, MM must have thought that it would be used (even if only to a small extent).  It's very weak and I'm not saying turn the fist into a main weapon in the game - merely make it a bit easier to hit!

I disagree. I think that punching was put in so that if you were standing on top of the enemy you wouldn't be helpless and just shoot infront of him. It would be stupid if no one could attack you when you are on top of them.

This would probably be a noobish move, seeing as you pass by enemies constantly. Other people would be like zombies, get too close and you die. We'd probably see people just punching around and around, from one person to another and that would be REALLY annoying. As someone said before me (can't remember who), it works better in a 3d world where there's a lot more physical space. Instead of 100 m2, you would have 100 m3! So you don't pass by enemies nearly as often.

I think the idea for exerting more fuel at a time would make the game a little too complicated. Or at least on the path to being too complicated.

With all regards to the unrealistic natures of soldat, in how many firefights have you seen people throw their guns down and try to melee their enemy? Also, if you wish you can use the combat knife, this is extremely effective at close range if you know what your doing and is pretty similar to a sword and only differs in the way that it's animations are different.

I don't know. The current method of melee attacks is pretty fun. I don't know how many times I've rushed up to someone, knocked the gun out of their hands and finished unloading my clip into them. It's one of the most satisfying feelings in Soldat for me.
This doesn't sound like it would be a very good improvement.

Noz, punching might kill in 2-3 hits but try accomplishing this on an online server; even a public. You'll be hard pressed to ever hit anyone.

And this gun can be (partialy) modded in. All it takes is an extremely well tweaked chainsaw : using the 'ol trick of negative speed vaules, up the damage to somewhere around 17000 and zoom past your enemies. In theory the shot gun pellets ('cuz that's what modded chainsaws use) would slaughter the enemy in front of you. On the other hand, it would similarily rip through the unfortunate ally behind you which can cause a problem.

I'm not into spending hours Weapon Modding, so feel free to try it.

The preferred outcome of war is peace. Ironic, huh ?
