A little question for your brain...
« on: March 23, 2008, 12:46:24 pm »
Ok here's the thing, if theres an air plane (that it's takeoff speed is at 60 MPH (100 KM/H))  on a conveyor belt going in the opposite direction at 60 MPH (or 100 KM/H) will the plane takeoff?

Note: please be honest of your answer dont go looking on google for the answer even if i'm 100% sure theres gonna be someone thats going to do it

Looks like Little Timmy needs to learn to use the search box!

My friends and I got into some heated arguments about these questions, so I decided to share them with SF to see what you guys think:
  • Imagine an airplane standing on a gigantic treadmill. The plane is taking off, but the treadmill is moving in the opposite direction at the exact same speed. Would it still be able to lift off?

Please read over that thread; we 'solved' the problem a LONG time ago and there's just too many retarded people who don't understand a twat about how airplanes work in this forum.

I wish I could change my arm into packets and send it over the internet to smack you in the face right now.

You worded it wrong, it is supposed to be "going in the opposite direction" like Espadon said.

The answer to yours is yes (unless you meant that the plane is staying still (e.g. the wheels are turning) and the treadmill is moving).  The answer to the original is no.  The plane taking off is all about the speed of air over the wings.

It needs an airflow under and over the wings for the plane to move, so the answer is NO.

Oh...my...God...justfeckinglockthisdamnthreadupal ready because people are just going to start thinking planes are cars with wings.

The answer, FLAB, to both questions is YES because the planes velocity will be independent relative to the ground it's on, unless the wheels are like..really rusty. For the question though, we need to assume they're not, so the airplane will take off either way!

Swebonny, geez, where did you learn that air moves with conveyor belts?

YES!
It would, the plain itself would still be generating lift, thus, creating force for it to lift its wings and point to the sky. The plain is in its own airspace while on the "treadmill" it is still generating speed, thus, still creating lift, understand?

I really can't understand how it would possibly work.
Let's say the the wheel on the plane is moving and so is the convoyer belt. How the heck can the plane fly?

If the plane is taking off against the conveyor belt it won't get airborn because in relation to the air particles, it's stationary.

Just the same way that when you run on a treadmill at the same speed as the treadmill is going (which you have to to stay on the treadmill) you are stationary and won't hear the wind in your ears like you do when you're running really fast.
