Easy-to-run soldat.
« on: April 03, 2008, 06:50:58 am »
I have a pathetic, wash-out of a computer that does not run Soldat. I was wondering if you could make a (slightly) less sophisticated variant of Soldat that allows it to run on my computer. Please do not post with "It runs on anything" because it's a lie. If you want my details for the problem:

256MB of RAM (Laptop)
XP Professional Installed
Vista Programs installed (The useless people who sold us the computer gave us these, we can't get rid of them).
1.4GHz of Processing Power.
Soldat opens, and the music starts playing, and the menu comes up (after ten or so minutes). I then try and start an offline game, and it will go black and I can here everyone playing, but It's all black. The same happens when I join an online game. Sometimes it doesn't even start up, it just plays music and remains black, no menu, nothing. I need help or a new low-processing soldat. DO NOT say get a new computer, because I can't.  :'(

Try to configure your setup...

I've played Soldat 1.3.1 on 333MHz & 320 MB RAM, and it worked.

Jesus... i play on a 1.2Ghz Athlon with zero issues.  However, I also have a crappy Radeon graphics card and 1GB of RAM, which probably helps a bit.

My guess is that your graphics card is the culprit here since Soldat is anything but RAM hungry. Plus the engine is technically a 3D engine since it makes heavy use of polygons and particles for rendering.  Do other 3D games run okay?  How old is this computer?

I strongly reccomend picking up some additional RAM and the cheapest graphics card you can find if what you have doesn't have good 3D acceleration.  You'll get more use out of that thing too, since both will boost your overall system performance.

Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake.  Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big old storm right in the eye and says, "Give me your best shot. I can take it."

Ok, your Laptop will run it, you just need to get rid of Fullscreen. Run it in windowed mode, that will help a bit. Turn any compatability settings on as well. Also, make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics chip, and sound card. I once had this problem, on a worse computer than yours.
All it takes is common sense. ;)

That computer will run Soldat with no problem.  I've run Soldat on a 300MHz computer with not much of a graphics card

It's not a problem with your PC hardware.  Try changing settings in the setup and update your drivers.

I play with a Pentium II 450 MHz, 256 MB RAM, TNT2 PRO 32 MB VRAM, and I run with minimal problems.  The only time I would think Soldat would require more hardware is when you play maps with high polygon count or/and scenery usage.  If you only play the default maps, you should absolutely have no problems.

set all graphics to minimum?  do that in the setup.

And, I agree on this actually, I mean I play with a nVidia go 7300, and i STILL get bad fps from time to time.  I belive soldat's core components may be over-demanding, seeing as I actually get similar FPS with soldat and CoD4,  lol

by the way what is your graphics card, I remember I had a computer with an ATI RAGE 3D PRO and since that is like pre-2000 it did not work despite the 500mhz processor and 128mb of RAM.

64MB graphics card. I have no idea of any further details.

OK. I found the problem. I've got Directx 7. Apparently I need Directx 8+. I don't know how to get it. Is there a way to download it?

You don't seriously think that I haven't tried that. I can't find one that works.

I looked at this one but 218MB's. Wow. I've got the worst Broadband ever (Fastest download ever recorded was 32Kb a second.)

So that might take a while. I get it anyway.
