I love playing but I am bad at it because I don't play it often. I win sometimes, most of the time though its luck because even though I hang out with smart people none of them take the time to get really good at chess. However I can murder in checkers.

Nah Despair, both of the games take skill and strategy.  I've seen lots of Tournaments that include checkers , chess, poker etc.

So lets not be negative about any board game.

OnTopic: I was watching a youtube video about Knight Opening, it was really interesting.  It seems that Knights are very important pieces to the game.

Moreso in the openings is the focus on knights, because they are pretty much the core of developing other pieces!

shogi is a variant of chess so essentially shogi = chess

you cannot compare an sub-game(not a good way to put it but hey, you get it) to the parent game

Despair has never played shogi and thinks reading the wiki makes him an authority on the subject.

I think my poor Chess record sort of exhibits my complete lack of foresight. My mind works best in the present, and I have a hard time thinking far enough ahead to come up with any decent strategies against competent opponents.

Maybe I'm being a little hard on myself, though, because I have beaten my dad a few times.

That's basically true, yes.  You win if capturing the king is explicitly inevitable (there's no place that the king can move that wouldn't result in his capture next turn).

Only anime shows I've felt any interest in over the years are Pokemon (original TV series) and various hentai.
so clearly jgrp is a goddamn anime connoisseur. his opinion might as well be law here.

No, that is a stalemate, if there  is no move he can go and he is safe it is a tie, if it is a checkmate the king loses.

I pretty much suck horribly at chess, but I still enjoy a game now and then. I don't posess the kind of  brain you need to be able to think like you need to think for chess. I think to straightforward for it.
