Drive problems.
« on: April 17, 2008, 01:39:22 pm »
Ok so when I formated I installed windows on the wrong drive, now my C drive is tiny and can't please anyone and my D drive is manly and mean. This was a problem I could avoid until now.. however I am now running into problems. Mostly the stuff I need to install goes straight to C... so I can't install anything. I tried to switch them around in computer management but C was a no-go. Can I switch things around so I can actually use the programs I want without formating.... again?

Yes, you can use gparted (it's a live cd). Download it, boot to it, and use it to resize your C partition then boot to windows, copy everything from D to C, then boot to gparted again and delete D then resize C to the full size of the drive.

resize his C partition how?  I don't understand what you're telling him to do.  If what you're saying doesn't end up making sense/working, I have another recommendation

Thanks jrgp

Well I still have to figure out how to use a live cd... I don't have the time to do anything now since I got church in a few. So if you care to type up another option go for it bricks, either way any advice is good advice.

I think the problem here is he has two drives, a small one (D) and a big one (C), but only the small one has the operative system. I have never had two different drives, but I think the problem's he run out of space in the drive with the actual OS so he can't install anything else, even though he has the big drive with a lot of empty space.

If that's the problem, you should probably get some drive backing up software that copies the hdd byte by byte. But then, that'd need an extra drive to back-up the contents of the drive you're moving to.

Yes, that is exactly what I was going to tell him to do (boot a Ubuntu livecd, use `dd` to copy byte-by-byte the small drive to the large drive, then use gparted or some Windows tool to make the filesystem the size of the drive)

You can resize/create new C,D,E,whatever drives using certain software. Don't know about the one jrgp posted, but I use PartitionMagic and it works wonderfully. Its pay to play though.

Yes, you would have to buy/find/steal a copy of PartitionMagic, whereas the tools that jrgp and I are talking about are open-source, all you have to do is download them, burn them, and follow our instructions

I'm just giving the guy an option. buying/finding/stealing partitionmagic would still probably be easier ;)

Do you mind telling me how running and finding a bootlegged copy of a commercial product is easier? And if you didn't bootleg it, why would you want to spent $65 on something that's readily available legally. With open source software, like GParted, you just go to the site, download an ISO, burn it, then boot to it. It'll have everything partition magic has and probably more.

Doing that might be graham's best bet.

I must have read his post wrong. I thought he said he had a tiny C partition and a large D partition on the same drive which was why I was suggesting that he resize them, copy files over from D, then delete D and resize C to the full size of the drive.

In no way is that easier... and besides, there are no discussions of piracy allowed on these forums.

Who is discussing piracy? And it was indeed easier for me. No booting, burning or mounting required.
But I do agree. Go with the free one.
