1.30 - 2 Minutes should suffice for a trailer. More than that is overkill.

Definitely agreed. It's a trailer, and trailers are short. Good trailers and videos are also really time consuming to make (not only getting the material but the editing) so if you want GOOD quality, long videos will have negative effect. I have seen a lot of Soldat videos and each one of them is too long for their own good, kills which aren't really worth showing etc. and trailer if anything shouldn't have anything like that. So 1½-2 minutes would be a pretty ideal length as Enesce said.

making a directory for every soldat movie would be really good too, and much easier to find them.

Quality matters more than length.  If you need a longer thing (closer to 2-3 minutes) to make it really good, go ahead.  If you can make it knock my pants off in 30 seconds, then go for it.
Maybe in the future I'll do another contest for longer videos (to promote Soldat)

Trailers often shows features and gameplay.

An idea might be to bring forth things as

-Moddability (Maps, mods being made by the community)
-Different gamemodes
-Popular
-Playable on Internet, Lan, Offline (bots)

And so on. Perhaps we should have an official checklist of things to include in the trailer?

That's why I'm not making this a contest that ends any time soon.  I know that a lot of people on here (especially Americans) have school ending in a few months.  I suspect this contest will last at least a few months to help students work around their school schedule

I've been looking at codecs and converters. Its still gonna need a ton of bandwidth and storage though.

bja888, I would host such a thing for the community probably, or at least I would try it out and see what happens.  Talk to me if you're interested in working on such a thing.  I would be interested on it all being torrent-based.  That is the best way to have any community-run media stuff, since it can be hosted for *extremely* cheap.  I would be willing to run and administer the torrent infrastructure for it (I already have a few torrent trackers running for specialized purposes).  I could see the site working something like:
- Each clip has a page with information about it (who made it, length, maps/other things used, people in it, etc).
- That page has a link to download the torrent
- That page also has an embedded youtube video where the clip can be watched (this way it can be previewed, but they can get a higher quality version to use via torrent)

On a side note: I was cleaning my HDD a few days ago and burned some cds. I burned some Soldat movies on one including The Blade and Ruthless. Out of curiosity, I wanted to see how the videos looked on my TV, since I have a chinatown region-free dvd player that plays.. well everything. Well, even though the image was of course lower resolution than the actual video file, it looked amazing. It was very clean and smooth. It looked awesome on my tv. So I was thinking, if soldat can look that good on a regular TV screen, why not put the trailer on TV. It's not far-fetched. Soldat has been on TV before, but to my knowledge wasn't done much justice. I think only in Germany it got decent coverage. If the final chosen submission is of good enough quality and shows the required subject matter, it would be a good idea to try and get a spot for it on a video game show on G4TV or Space Channel (cheap Sci-fi Channel knockoff) and Sci-fi Channel, since it's mentioned. I'd donate toward the cost of putting a trailer on TV, even if it is shown once on a show (and reruns).

On a further related side note.. this could be a project for another day. bja888 got me thinking also of putting together a dvd .iso of all the greatest Soldat movies made. You could download the iso, burn it and then enjoy with friends on your big 52 inch screen in the living room.
