New Graphics card
« on: April 24, 2008, 07:13:41 pm »
i need a new graphics card (you probably know this already)
I recently built a new computer.
my old computer had an AGP graphics card, and my new one has only pci and pci-e slots, hence the problem.
I'm looking for something cheap, around $80.
Whats the difference between Nvidia and Radeon?
any suggestions?

Radeon is generally about 50 bucks cheaper for an equivalent card.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102708 is a decent card, if you don't need such a powerful card you could go even cheaper.

Whats the difference between Nvidia and Radeon?

Nvidia is a brand and Radeon is a series or product line.

Yes, but you probably wouldn't want to. It certainly wouldn't be on high graphics.

My card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161207

Its great, if you have the money for a better card, go for it. Especially if you want to game.

I think the ATi HD 2400 Pro 256mb is an equivalent rival to the NVIDIA 8400, only the 2400 is cheaper.  But I doubt you will play crysis on high.

I play BF2 on med-high settings, with shaddows on at 30-40 fps :)  that's with my ATi 2400.

Also NFS: Most Wanted runs MAX settings. except with no AA or shaddows at about 25-30 FPS.

That's just an idea of what it's like.  I think you could maybe play crysis on low providing your Processor is good enough :)

Generally nVidea cards experience less problems with games.... since most games are primarily developed on nVidea cards. Before buying any graphics card I recommend you find out as much about it as possible, reading reviews and articles. Make sure it has ample memory for what you need it for.

dude these days vram means shit as long as it's like 256mb. all the vram does is help when the cpu is bottlenecked.
anyway I found a decent card, but it's a bit above your price range
get an nvidia geforce 8800 gt, it's like £120(which because of crap inflation will be equal to ~$120), or something of the kind imo

CPU is too low to play crysis I think.  It could play CoD4 though, seeing as it recomends 1.8GHz Dual core.  An 8800GT is pretty much the best card money could buy until the 9800 came out.  8800s are very cheap for their high performance, but if you happen to have a few hundred extra dollars, you could go with a 9800.  It runs crysis like a dream, just watch on youtube ;)  8800 Will do so aswell but may not be able to cope with some of the future games comming out, you may even have to lower some graphics settings on games after 2008 :(   So yeah, choose wisely.  Your card will never remain "good" throughout it's existence, time brings them all down :(
