Climbing
« on: April 25, 2008, 11:30:22 pm »
Hey, I'm pretty sure this is the right place to post this thread.
Anyway, today I got some very lucky caps on three climbing maps. I'm a member of the largest Soldat Climbing community, and they have all been on the Demo Request list for a veeeery long time.
Two of these are my greatest Soldat achievements, so I thought I would post them here as well!
So first of all, I had been trying to cap grassyclimb for a while, I died about 5 times on the last jump, and also died about 200 times overall. So it's good to finally have this map under my belt. I have no idea when this map was made, but I've heard rumours that it's pre-backflip.. I tested it and found you can do every jump without flips, but it's ridiculous.
If anyone knows Untitled, get him to see this ;)
ctf_IqsTower is a hard one, mainly because of the 'Vegetation Area'. I replaced the predominant scenery in that part with a green pixel, so it was made quite a lot easier. The hardest part in that map is definitely the hurts tunnel, because the polygons have been placed just above the platform, so you get stuck and have to do a miniscule jump to get up there.
kz_staryhell is probably the hardest climb map ever made, I have climbed up to the mini stars at the end but I fell onto one  :( so I'm happy to have this one capped and demoed.
Enjoy those, and if you're interested in the climbing section of Soldat, be sure to join This Site to see hundreds of maps demoed, over 800 climb map's time records, and see new maps posted.
I have updated the thread with the maps required to view the demos attached. Have fun and hope to see you climbing some time  8)

Climbing fails.

Not really. I found some of the climbing skills useful in a real battle when agility and speed are needed to get out of a tricky situation.

Climbing is good - as STM1993 said, it increases your agility and speed and hence your skill with a saw =O
I think
I FAIL at backflipping, how do you do it?

I FAIL at backflipping, how do you do it?

1. Backflip
Hold back and hold up and quickly tap right click. If you want to backflip with jets, hold down right click. If you tap right click a bit slow, you'd jump backwards and then backflip. If you're TOO slow, your backflip would fail.

2. Jump Backlip (forward)
Run forward and press up (this would result in you jumping forward). Then, you hold back and hold up and then right click.

Backflip has alot of timing. Sometimes, you may see yourself just fly horizontally really fast and far, other times you'd just flip the normal way.

Also, notice that when your Soldat's feet stay opened up like this: [Alphaguy], you can backflip. If your Soldat's feet close back together and start running in mid-air, then you can't backflip again until you touch the ground.

I updated the first post with the maps you'll need so you don't have to download all 1000 climb maps.
I'm not interested in either changing your opinion Scarab, or your opinion itself. All I think is that the Soldat game engine has great Physics for climbing, and if I want to play a shooter i'll play CSS at least.
I also can't believe how many people don't know how to backflip :F
There are a lot of different jumps that require backflipping, the most important one of all that comes in handy in INF/CTF the cannonball.
Takes a lot of practice but you end up going twice as fast as your pursuer, an idea for that is capping ctf_Viet from either team in ~17 seconds.
Try it and compare your time

Don't fix it, it's already been demoed and there's a tricky bit that you need to get your head around..

This. I learned a lot in all  my years of climbing, movement-wise.
