Not necessarily. I'm very much a fan of your 'lack of internal outline' approach since it's how I do it too. Oftentimes 'internal outlines' are extraneous and discourage use of tonal values to create detail [instead enforcing a reliance on outlines alone] which is a problem too often seen in pixel art here.
