I don't think you can "convert" them but if you have something like fraps just run the demo in soldat and record with fraps and then edit it.
That is to extract the demo to .BMP's, and the demo is actually played to do that.I guess soldat just takes a screenshot of every frame, because it does slow down the speed of play.
I think that instead of using fraps, you can try and get a media file converter.

The reason for this is that the .sdm files are not videos encoded in a codec like xvid or whatever, they are, afaik, instructions Soldat reads as "player runs here" "bullet is shot in this direction" "hits running player" type instructions. This is why if you mod Soldat's graphics / sounds / etc, the demos correspond to your mod(s).
