ctf_Oracle (waypointed)
« on: June 09, 2006, 03:40:12 pm »
[EDIT] Keron Cyst has waypointed ctf_Oracle, and I fixed some minor poly bugs on the platforms. ctf_Oracle 1.1  [/EDIT]

I've had the concept for this map in my head for over a year and I finally got inspired enough to sit down and create it :] The stone texture came from one of Avarax's maps and I think the other one is from chakapoko maker's texture pack. I used 3 of Serial Killer's custom sceneries, the rest should all be default.

Awesome! This map looks really cool. The gameplay as well the looks both seem to be good. The multitexturing and coloring/shadowing is done really well. Good job.

Just tried it out, it's very damn nice, there's all sorts of places to hide, but bot support would make this hella more fun for people who like just a quick play in between things without the hazards of online play.

Wow! Extremely good looking map. Had a small match between friends just a while ago in this map and I couldn't find any complaints from this one. I give it full 10/10.

Excellent! What a shock!
You used pretty colours and clever light sources! Also the layout is very interesting. I love the lianas aww.
I just regret the flags are so high... it doesn't feel convenient to use the bottom path. Well perhaps I'm mistaking.

But seriously, this is one of the best maps every made!

I just hope the framerate isn't brought down like in your other map...

I really tried to keep the poly count down this time, which caused a lack of detail in a lot of areas. But I just tested it with edges and I didn't get a drop in framerate, so I guess it was worth it :)

looks better on the overview than in-game actually and the lack of plot on the polygon astounds me, there is nothing unusual about the poly placement at all.
disappointment...

I can waypoint it with my mediocre skills if you want. I'll get to it tomorrow after class. I really like the lighting effects on the upper level. Beautiful.

Thanks, Vltava. I need something to do right now. :P

You could dl. it later and maybe learn how I work, and add that to your own technique! The enemy flag area's gonna be a pain for bots arising from beneath, but I think I can manage it. Awesome work. The texture is great.

EDIT Ooh, this is going along faster than I thought. I've nearly perfected Path 1, and since it's virtually symmetrical except for a few polys at the bottom, PolyWorks' duplication & flip functions will allow me to release it in less than half an hour.

Ah, dang, it'll have to wait... :(

This map should be a default map on the next soldat version, cause this is a brilliant map, great balance in it and the colors and shading is great. Its just the spawning i dont get, why they fall, but u have medic packs there so thats no problem.

Are you playing on Realistic? Just jet a bit before you hit the ground.

I've nearly perfected it. The bottom is taking a lot longer than I thought, as I predicted, but there are just some maps whose waypoints will never be perfect no matter what one does. :P I'll e-mail Anna the waypointed version soon.

Done. Also suited for HTF. What's hilarious about the stuff is that I have absolutely no waypoints specifically telling the bots to take the lower path from the spawn zone, and yet they tend to take the route anyways, either by faulty movement or combat ;D

I did look into your waypointing, but I've finally got my own "style" down, and it works well (inf_Sofo), but thanks for your guide and help, anyways. As for the map, I finally got around to playing it thanks to Keron Cyst, and it's larger than I thought. Quite fun, but more spots to hide would be pleasant.

WOW! This map is B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L! Looks great as 4vs4 - 5vs5 map! I wish there'd be a down-scaled 3v3 version of this! Seriously this looks like it's out of fucking Tomb Raider! :D

Only thing I dislike is the stairs in the middle section, rather it'd be one slope instead.
And also, I think the texture was changed within 1.7.1, It doesn't display the one in the pics in this thread anymore. :(

It really is a pretty map. What's even crazier is how the download link in the original post http://individual.utoronto.ca/caek/ctf_oracle.zip all the way from 2006 still works, 12 years after the fact and probably 10 years after Anna left us. That's some serious lack of link rot.

So I tried to point my finger at what exactly bothers me in this map, and what do I think will make it a better map and suitable for competitive 3vs3.

1) It must be downsized. the scale is too big for 3vs3 setting.
2) The lower routes have to be mirrored, my illustration shows only 1 spot that should be equalized. by the whole route should be mirrored.
3) The textures were beautiful, and now probably replaced. I don't see these beautiful bricks anymore.

I really hope some pro mapper picks this map up and fixes it.

Here's the illustration for some more suggestions.
