How often do you visit Wikipedia?
« on: May 19, 2008, 06:54:32 pm »
I know some people hate Wikipedia while others swear by it. I'm kind of in the middle, I refer to it almost always when I want some information, be it computer programming related or to see some information on my favorite bands. I pretty much don't just use Wikipedia for stuff that might be really important, like school reports, where I use a combination of Wikipedia and other sites listed in Google's results.

How often do you visit Wikipedia? Why?
There are other worlds than these

Never, you can edit pages in wikipedia, and not just that, I never use any .com website for reference.  I use .edu

Screw that, .com sites can have massive amount of information. Just make sure its legit and you got plenty of new sources.

Yeah, it's not as if they cite their sources or anything.  Remember, open editing also means self-correcting.  It also means all information will be up-to-date.

Me, I have it as one of my search engines for Firefox.  I go there probably every day.

Only anime shows I've felt any interest in over the years are Pokemon (original TV series) and various hentai.
so clearly jgrp is a goddamn anime connoisseur. his opinion might as well be law here.

ignorant dumbass.

If anything wikipedia is a great jumping off point for research, it hands you references on a silver platter and explains the subject in detail.

Besides the fact that most sources have the base information(Dates, names, locations, ect) repeated in all of them you can just check another source to see if the wiki is up to snuff off the base info, if it is the article is your oyster.

First of all, don't call me a dumb ass.  You just making yourself look like a fool.

Second, its my opinion.  Wikipedia could be crawling with false research.  You never know.

I'm with ds dude on this one actually.

In my opinion the best information is pulled from the sources (i.e. actual journal articles and the like) cited on Wiki, not Wiki itself.  I'd get my ass handed to me, to put it lightly, for ever referencing Wiki.  It may be easier to understand, but so are CliffsNotes.

I try not to use Wikipedia, although some has an amazing information, some have some bull shit informations. So I usually don't take the risk. Unless there's the thing called "cannot be edited."

i've noticed that lately i've been visiting wikipedia several times a day. if i have a question, be it dealing with sound synthesis, mathematics, graphic terminology, miscellaneous sciences, or other things, wikipedia always has the answer.

besides, no one's going to vandalize LaTeX code.

Step 1) Use Wikipedia for entire project
Step 2) Cite different sources that you never even used
Step 3) Have sex for the rest of class

I use wikipedia on most all of my assignments.  I just avoid information I'm not sure about.  i.e.  The moon is made of cheese.  ;D

Pretty regularly just for casual information, not for doing reports or anything important, since I'm a factory drone. I generally trust it, but wouldn't trust anything vital to it.

a lot of the time. due to the fact that so many people contribute to it, that even if it is wrong, the general consensus is that it's believed to be correct.

And it always say it is quoted from wikipedia just to be safe. I also use a lot of other sources, like books and such.
Lol, internets.

I use Wikipedia pretty often, I'd say its pretty convenient and very informative. I don't like to search other places. I like how Wikipedia looks as well, so ya. Every time I need to look for info, the first place I go would be Wikipedia, while Google would be my second choice. Sure, anyone can just edit and put their own point of views which may be biased or whatever, but with so many people who really care about the site's articles, I feel that the site is quite safe.

I don't really count how often, but I estimate around once every three days.

I use it several times a day. Boring, empty hours become filled with fun and adventure during my expeditions into deep wikipedia-space. It's probably my cheapest shot ever pulled: I know a lot of things from wikipedia, and people think of me as someone smart because of it, but infact it's pathetic amount of information on the matter. It's still a fun jumppad though!
