« on: May 19, 2008, 11:05:00 pm »

It is in desperate need of fixing, its probably got so many dll and system screw-ups (I get the blue screen of death pretty often, and the "_____ failed halp me").

So any programs or anything to help me fix this?

Specs:

512 Ram
60 gig Hardrive
Service Pack 2
1200MHz
1.2GHz
and a Crappy Nvdia graphics card with 16 mb on it.

A good place to start is to download HijackThis and upload the log here I suppose (dont remove anything, just cause its in the list doesnt mean its spyware or whatever)

When you get a BSoD write down the code for it, else its rather futile.

Also you could check your windows event logs..
You'll find the logs under "admin stuff" on the controll panel (classic view)
Or, given you are using windows XP and your windows install is c:\windows\ put

"C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmc.exe" "C:\WINDOWS\system32\eventvwr.msc" /s

in the run box (start menu -> run) to view it :) (including the quotes)

CCleaner can remove gigs and gigs of temporary files wasting space and it's got a built in registry bug fixer. Running both of these will speed your system up a tad. You can also use it to control what programs start when your computer starts. Download.

DIE
Thats just internet options and msconfig rolled up together into one redundant program.

Glary Utilities is a registry cleaner which can remove useless/redundant/old/empty registry files, that might remove some of those errors. it will also do useless things like temp files/broken shortcuts remover/spyware remover, and also has a memory optimizer a startup list and a few other features.

I've been using CCleaner for a while now and I really recommend it for deleting temporary files.
Though I don't use the registry cleaner cause I don't see any reason to risk a fucked system for some ever so slightly speed improvement..

I'd have to agree with Amblin on that one :)
However, CCleaner wont solve any problems (unless your HDD is 99.8% full), but it will give you a minor performance boost, and delete any logs/old temp files on whatever you are doing on your computer :) So I'd advise you to run it on a regular basis.

Cleaning the registry can go very wrong, however most utilities for such a job are smart enough to not fuck up.

Tune up utilities is a sweet collection of programs if you want to improve your computers performence, its also got some programs used to search for errors on your system. Its not free though, and I doubt it will help you with fixing the errors you have.

In addition to what I said in the first post you can run a check disk to see if your hdd is having issues. I'd recommend doing so after hijackthis though.

With exception to some stuff that you dont really need, and a few browser toolbars / homepage.
The only things that are a bit fishy is:

O9 - Extra button: Support - {F97F6E5E-11A9-409E-BF05-3AC9C0A49207} - C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SIGNUP\Presario.htm (HKCU)
There should be a button, probably saying "support" in IE, which I'd think leads to a malware page. I'd remove this one, its only a button in IE anyways :>

O1 - Hosts: 204.244.184.143 SafeWeb.com
O1 - Hosts: 204.244.184.143 WWW.SafeWeb.com

This is either something quite old (you ever used norton?), or something left behind by some spyware, you can remove this too if you want, if you dont you wont be able to go to www.safeweb.com (which leads to symantecs homepage anyway)

Other than that it looks clean to me, so your problem isnt spyware :)
I take it you have done a virus scan? (and updated the virus definitions before doing so)

Check the event logs (see my first post), if anything is giving off errors there post them here (under system).

Here is a short description on how to run chkdsk, this will check your HDD for errors.

Have you installed any new programs (drivers and such) lately? (lately being relative to when the issues appeard.

When did you last format your hard disk? Also you have to defragment at least every couple months. Clean up registry and temporary files. Glary utilities or Tune Up utilities will help.

Maybe you should just format your HDD and install Windows again.
I suggest you take a look at nLite (http://www.nliteos.com/). It's a handy utility for creating your Windows Installation cd from your original. You can integrate SP3, you have loads of tweaks you maybe haven't heard off and also unattended installation with preconfigured options for your system. That could help with your old computer gaining a performance boost when you remove unneded system aps etc.

Hope that helped a bit.

One off tropic question. Why not use the ordinary hard disk cleanup from windows? Its already in the can. I run it once every month. I remove my regfiles by hand. I like it thatway. You feel smart and getsomething done whit your worthless freetime.
(Me need a hobby)

Try defrag your hard disk. Helpd me alot once.

The issues have been here for years I've just ignored them. (Will edit when I get the system errors checked).

- Never touched Norton.
- No Crazy Viruses.
- Nothing new installed.

Edit: Quite a few system errors:

1. "Service Control Manager" The npkcrypt service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

2. "System Error" Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 f89f9a51, parameter3 f35b5388, parameter4 00000000.

3. "atapi" The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period.

Those are the main ones, they repeat themselves many times over. There were more errors but they had to do with my interwebs.

A Few application errors also.

I defrag it when I remember to.

CCleaner does nothing that windows doesn't do by default, it is a completely unnecessary program. There is little/no risk with that registry cleaner and it fixes error messages.

And deleting temp files won't make your computer any faster.

1 - I got this one too (whever I reboot), dont know whats causing it, and tbh I dont care. I think its just some old registry entries. (yes I use a regcleaner -.-)
The npkcrypt service is related to nProtect, I figure I got it when installing some game that uses it, not causing me any trouble, so I dont mind ^^

2 - Not sure whats causing this :< could be alot of things, in most cases somehow related to hardware, check all your drivers/components (in device manager), how often does the bsod appear?

3 - Not sure about this one either :/ but from what I read it might be the cdrom, had any trouble with it?

Anything similar with regard to when you get the bsod?

Concerning the CCleaner thing, I tried the windows cleaner, it found 1kb, CCleaner found 30mb after I removed the 1 kb -.- So dont tell me it does the same job..
Further more you cant configure the windows one much and its slower and less informative.

Cleaning temp files can make your OS faster, having a hdd without junk is good in every way aswell. It wont add any fresh shiny new megahurts to your CPU or anything tho :>
