Best Admin: jrgp, he's like the forum mom and a pet dog rolled into one.
The first two for the NES. Especially A Link to the Past for the "RPG" elements, though Twilight Princess had the best fighting system.
Now lets talk about the chronological order. Heres some info, its been hotly debated for months, and maybe years. The original way its was introduced was by its releases:The Legend of ZeldaZelda II: The Adventure of LinkThe Legend of Zelda: A Link to the PastThe Legend of Zelda: Link's AwakeningThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeThe Legend of Zelda: Majora's MaskThe Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of AgesThe Legend of Zelda: Four SwordsThe Legend of Zelda: The Wind WakerThe Legend of Zelda: Four Swords AdventuresThe Legend of Zelda: The Minish CapThe Legend of Zelda: Twilight PrincessThe Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass Some people think that The Minish Cap should be first, because it introduces more to link, others think Link to the Past should be first because it has the word "Past" in it. Although I think that absurd, because you can't really judge by title, you have to judge by gameplay. What do you guys think?
It's the second game. It was originally the first but then The Minish cap preceded it.

Controversies? What controversies?Pick another word.Personally I think the Legend of Zelda games never originally had and interlocking story. They made The Legend of Zelda 2 as a direct sequel, yes, but only based off of the success of the first game and thus began the milking of the franchise. I think then, the intention was to start from scratch with Ocarina of Time, replacing the original and depth-less story but then as they milked and milked the franchise they worked on creating sequels and prequels to link all the games together which was never the original intention. Most of the games boil down to Defeat foe after long quest and save princess with the exceptional exception of Majora's Mask which I think had great time-based gameplay which no Zelda game since has managed to develop on.
