There seems to be some confusion as to what karma is for. Some think it's a funny thing to have, and some think it's supposed to be a meaningful sub-rank. :\

I personally think it's neither though. I don't really think it's funny to have a karma system (I don't see how it is), but neither do I think it is a meaningful sub-rank because sub-ranks like these are usually very unreliable.

o rly?

I enjoyed Karma while we had it, but it was hardly used for anything more than bashing. "You've got -200 karma, you must be a bitch" Unfortunately, most people around here smite rather unrelentingly, so it's not a real fair measure of a person's worth to the community.

"Wow, that was so amasing and insightful that I feel I need to reward you with one meaningless point!" 3 days later most people would forget about something thats cool, while hatred lingers around for a very long time.

I am for Karma's return. It really serves no purpose, but it adds personality to the board.

There could be an option like on some other forums where you can remove it in your profile. It won't show under your name and no one can vote +/-. Thus you can let the other people that like the karma use it.

Then people with really bad karma can hide it ;)

I like the idea that only mods can change karma, if someone does something good for the community etc.

Yeah im with that ^

But you gotta have a little bit of influence from the community... say the mods select members who dont tend to spam much or anything and will likely not abuse the feature to be able to use the karma system.  or you could PM mods asking them to raise or lower someones karma and give good reaosn for it.

I am for something more along the lines of approval. If you 10 people vote approving and 10 vote disaproving, you have a 50% approval rating. If 3 vote good and 7 vote bad, you have a 30% approval rating. Etc. This would make it so you don't have huge negative values, but at the same time giving a feel for the general attitude torward this person.

Maybe make the votes weighted

So if 20% approval guy makes a vote it doesn't count as much as mr. 70% approval rating's vote

That's not democratic. As expected from a borderline fascist.

I would like it if you could see what POSTS people gave/took your karma on. Not what people did, but what post was right next to you when they changed it.

I don't have the time to code a limit into the karma system.  If I do someday, maybe we'll try it with a +/-10 or 25 limit
