Let me test it a little...

shinyfoo - Sheet
feck - the F word
gay - Not Changed
sex machine - Wore

^ Okay I'm done testing.

Errm... I think the swear filter is fine, if it doesn't overlap any words that may contain the word within.

Considering the nature of this forums it should be censored.

Considering the nature of this forums it should be censored.
But it can get a whole lot worse, That word is not just by itself, see, you've got sh!t and then you've got crap, which still means the aformentioned Sh!t, but it's not censored.

for example-

Nigger, Jungle bunny, coon, darkie Spear chucker Ect. None of those are filtered. So really there is almost always a way around the filter, if you're clever. If you want to to be censored then you've got to censor ALL of it.

Better off to just filter the really bad ones.

I'm not really racist, I'm just proving a point.

I tend to PM anyone I see abusing the swear filter

I'd use the word "poop" to censor every curse.

I don't see what the big deal is using a swear filter. It makes it look like the admins are a bunch of babysitters. I'm sure more than 50% of Soldateers are over 18. Those who are here and under 18 swear anyway and probably know more curses than your average sailor. If there is no filter, I can see that some may abuse the filter (edit, me dummy) that privilege... but it would be a very small margin. There are many other forums without swear filters and there tends to be little abuse. It's just the douchebags that no one likes in real life or online that are so desperate for attention that they usually will post nothing but profanity or just complete useless replies to posts. This will happen in any forum, regardless of what you have for a swear filter. It's nice that you want to protect the eyes of younger, innocent Soldat enthusiasts, but if you think about it... no one that plays Soldat is innocent anymore. :P I mean, it's one of the goriest 2d games around, you can piss on people in the game and popular servers don't have swear filters.

This is my opinion of course. I just don't think that protecting the mass of members from a couple of forum abusing douchebags is worth the trouble to babysit everyone and make sure they stay in line. There is also the misconception that it keeps language a little less heated in flamewars. If someone wants to truly put someone else down, there are many ways of brutal psychological attacks that don't require the use of profanity.

If you are going to use a swear filter, could you at the very least use a decent replacement or just mask the word with *** or a "censored". Every time I see the words: shinnyfoo or bollocks, it makes me want to go to the house of the person who invented the word shinnyfoo and paint the inside of their house with it.

My 2 cents.

I really relate to this perspective. I'm not so sure I would go to such an extreme standpoint (saying you'd paint FLAB's house's walls with "shinyfoo" repeatedly :P), but if staff is active (more like "vigilant") enough, a swear filter is debatable. I used to be for a filter, but ever since protests at another board some years ago showed me its nature, I feel that it makes the staff lazy, and quietly dulls the staff's sense to the poor behavior that it should always be on guard against.

The rules here say "No over-abundant swearing"; I'm not sure what "over-abundant" is, lol, but that's fine! But it also has "Do not abuse the swear filter" when staff as well post "feck." That makes it interesting. Whenever I see swear words here, I edit the posts silently and just leave an edited-by trail (I just edit practically everything that I see since I only hang out in the mapping section, and the words annoy me anyways). That is enough to show staff activity and to let people know of what they're doing, if they ever bother to return to their posts; I would think on any board, idiots who swear in every other word would be warned on sight, so I feel if the staff just edits out excessive swearing in the background, the filter isn't needed. (To me "excessive swearing" is a word every 10 or 20 posts or so; any more and start to take 'em out. Or take 'em all out, anyways... this board is so gigantic I don't think the staff would ever be able to nail everything.)

I also factor into account Soldat's own lack of such a filter (right? Does the latest have one? :P I dunno).

New insulting words/phrases are made all the time. They can't be considered dodging the swear filter since the filter doesn't cover them. They are valid slang English; the filter can't stop them. It should be staff vigilance that keeps an eye out for idiocy. (Of course, I'm expressing all this assuming that the staff is willing to step up to the plate and do more stuff than lock threads/warn people. If not, then I could probably argue going the other way around, too.)

You could always make it so it is a default option, but if you went into the profile tab there would be something that allowed you to turn it off.
