Meditation on soldat
« on: July 01, 2008, 10:11:05 am »
There are many ways to train.  Some people practice.  Some people do drills on specialty servers such as climb or (my favorite) saw & law.  But what people often fail to discuss is the mental discipline of becoming an effective Soldat player.  I hope to address a few points that I think can help us become better players.  There are many methods and guides to meditation out there, but rather than offer full comprehensive guide to it, I'll just be making a few suggestions.

Play When You Play.  This may sound stupid, but we often do other things when playing Soldat.  I have a bad habit of trying to eat while playing.  Others, I know, listen to music and wind up fidgeting with the tracks.  Most often people wind up talking too much and not focusing on the game.  But in order to focus best on the game at hand, we have to learn to dedicate all of our attention to the game.  We must be as actively attuned to the game as we can be.  In other words, do not eat, chit-chat or play around with your music.  Just play  Soldat when you're playing Soldat.

Posture and Breathing.  We slouch at our computers.  Our breathing becomes shallow.  But in order to keep our attention focused on the game, we need to have an awareness of ourself.  Good posture aids attentiveness, and breathing helps you relax.  We should learn to play with our back straight while taking deep breaths.

Clear Your Mind.  While you play Soldat, there is a probably a constant stream of thoughts and emotions coming into your mind.  Thoughts that don't have to do with Soldat (such as "I should do some more studying") will interrupt your game.  But do not let the words in your head distract you from the game.  Let these thoughts and interruptions go.  Whenever you find your mind wandering, bring your attention back to your posture and breathing and the game.

Emotions.  We all get frustrated sometimes.  Whether it is a bad day or some noob with a m79 keeps blowing you up, you temper will flare.  But do not start acting upon your emotions.  Do not let them guide your game.  Be rational and calm and focus only on the game you are playing at this very moment.  Whatever deaths you have had, whatever the score may be, that has little to do with your actions at this very moment in the game, and you must not allow yourself to be swayed by the emotions they evoke.  Be aware, and play smart.

I'm no zen master, but if anybody has further questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

Oh yeah? I'm better when not concentrated on the game. Soldat's sounds are off and I listen to music from YouTube while playing.
When I argue with my mom or someone else in the room, I get alien-perfection results, and not only in Soldat, but other games too @_@
Thinking about your gameplay when in action kinda makes things worse.

It is completely a matter of personal preference

I found myself playing much better when I am comfortable with how I play ; having music in the background and just being the way I am. I have tried a few of these methods before, but they don't suit me. Even if they actually do, then I guess I haven't reached the level.

I have tried, as some other players may do, turn off sound. I could feel why people could player better without sound AT ALL, because there is no sound to agitate them at all. They may play music in the background, sure, but it is better for themselves.

There are also some pretty amazing players, who play much better when they are completely driven, perhaps even by anger. When someone makes them angry, they will somehow be able to channel all that anger into their gameplay ability and ultimately play better than if they had calmed down.

Anyway, thank you for sharing at least.

Yes you're right. I like to play on music from: Lunaman, Nirvana, Tupac, Jump remixes are good also.

Anyway, thank you for sharing at least.

1 thing is verry important: don't write whole the time if you kill one, just stay concentrated.

When I have to play as good as I can (cw's :d), I just concentrate on the game, nothing else.

Lol - I tend to practice either 1v1 or gathers, before I have like big matches.  When I get frustarted I suck, so I try to keep my cool.  I try to not do anything else While I'm playing.
And I try to not be confused by anything around me, and keep the mouse nice and steady :)

Being super focused isn't that needed. I've talked on the phone and capped while killing everyone in my way. Just play it for what it is, a game. Eventually you will get good; your mind can wander and still be a decent player.

Play hard, go pro. Works VERY well on Soldat.

Gather alot for few months. Play At least 5 gathers per day for 2 months, then join ACTIVE clan. Play at least 10 clanwars per week, and try to gather as much as you can. After few months of such clanwaring and gatherin you will notice the progress. Continue doing so and you will become one of the best. Takes one year, no more.

Could've sworn he was telling you not to take it too seriously:
Maybe I'm misinterpreting that, but he's basically telling you to not care how well you're doing. Which is not taking it seriously.

If the server atmosphere is appropriate, feel free to use any hilarious taunts you've come up with. Really cuts back on the tension.

Actually, most of this advice can be applied to essentially any discipline; not just Soldat or video games.

Its not always a matter of reading someone's long paragraphs about the importance of this and that yadda yadda yadda.  Like I said, all I need is a clear mind and I tend to do better.  (Particularly chainsawing)
