Lobby back up
« on: July 12, 2008, 04:05:31 pm »
After the U13/Puttynuts maintenance, there was a portability issue with the lobby server.  It has now been moved to a virtual machine that matches the software it ran on before.

The lobby is back online, however it is at a new IP.  All server owners should restart their servers and flush their DNS caches.

On Windows: ipconfig /flushdns

On Debian and its derivatives (including Ubuntu): sudo /etc/init.d/dns-clean

Everyone just needs to wait for ISP DNS caches to expire, the old lobby is not running so do not try and connect to it.  If you can connect to a lobby now, you're connecting to the right one and just need to wait for server owners to restart their servers.

If you cannot connect to a lobby right now, you need to wait for your ISPs DNS cache to expire.  This may take up to 12 hours from my original post.

Cool, works now.

On CentOs (and probably on RHEL and Fedora), you can flush the DNS cache by doing this:
service nscd restart as root or sudo /etc/init.d/nscd restart as a normal user.

You do a great job FLAB, without you and your service the lobby server would be unreliable and spoil the fun of the game. Thanks for improving the quality of soldat.

Hrm, the lobby works on my old computer, but not my new one. They are hooked up to the exact same router on the exact same modem, but only one of them works. Could this be because my new computer is portforwarded and has a static IP, or am I just an idiot.

On your computer which isn't working with the lobby, first restart (if you haven't already) and then try this:
Start > Run > Type cmd and hit enter. Type ipconfig /flushdns > hit enter > restart again.

edit: Just because your computer has a static IP and is port forwarded probably won't make a difference.

ok, I am confused... In order for me to get the lobby to show up, I need to do the ipconfig/flushdns then restart my computer. but I can only request the lobby successfully once, after, I have to do the same process again. I hate restarting my computer just for that. can anyone help me?

Well, since Flies just moved the lobby to a new server with a different IP address, I'd assume it would take a few days for it to completely propagate to all the DNS servers in the world, namely the one on your connection. So maybe waiting a few days will fix the problem.

Can't you just tell us the new IP of the lobby, and then we can put it in the file 'lobby_servers.txt' which is in the soldat directory?
Or make a simple patch which does that?

Tried the flushdns thing, got the message "The requested operation requires elavation" I'ma gonna wait a few days, then start to get worried, I love soldat. The thing that confuses me is that it works on my old computer (XP, new one is vista if that matters) and they are, like I said, on the exact same internet. At least I can still play it...

I take no responsibility for the problems you have down the road if you put the new lobby IP in your configs without using DNS.  The lobby server IP will probably change again, the difference next time will be that I'd be anticipating it and could make the transition 100% transparent (I've been changing the lobby server around on and off for over a year and nobody had any idea because of how I was doing it)..

The only reason it caused a problem this time is that it was unanticipated.

Go ahead and put the IP in your configs, but when I change the lobby next time (like I have been as I've worked on it), you'll have problems.

the trick perhaps would be that the next time it changes, just place the old ip (rr.soldat.pl) back in the text file?

Do this, open lobby_servers.txt (it is in your Soldat folder) and replace what's in it with 67.106.77.21. The next time it doesn't work, open the file and replace that ip address with rr.soldat.pl

That should do it.

Can't you have multiple IP's and web addresses in there, like if you had this
Code: [Select]
rr.soldat.pl
67.106.77.21

Then it would try rr.soldat.pl first, if that didn't work, then it tries 67.106.77.21.
Does it do that?

Im saying this cause once i read that you could have backups in the file like, some website for the all seeing eye, and if the lobby was down it would use those.

EDIT: Ok, I tried that idea i had, and it works (well it gets the servers now, but when u change it, i don't know).
So could someone tell me if this is a good idea?

That is probably because there is only about 220 servers when you request :D

The whole POINT of not using an IP in the lobby file is for times like this when the IP changes... Just flush your cache and be patient

I'm not sure whether this has anything to do with the server maintenance(but it has coincided with it), but when I use the lobby it works fine until it it pings the servers and I cannot enter ANY server(not even gather servers) at all. Here's a screen:

The ping has absolutely nothing to do with the lobby server, that is done by the soldat client itself.

yes, it is useless to change the file. As EnEsCe and I have said, everyone should really be patient and not change the file.  We don't want to deal with peoples' problems when the lobby IP changes again in the future and they hard-coded it against our advice.

it wasn't hard coded, I added another line with the new IP, and FYI I haven't changed the lobby_servers.txt file, it is still like:

rr.soldat.pl
67.106.77.21

And works perfectly.
