Do we really need a soldat 1.5.0?

Keep this civil and flameless. What's wrong with soldat 1.4.2? Do we really need a soldat 1.5?

MM has his reasons...and we don't question his reasons. Well 1.4.2 has its bugs, so yes I think there should be one.

1) Bugs

2) Balance

Those are the basics

Aesthetic changes - these are pretty much harmless, for the most part can be modded, and even overlooked. Keep in mind that different effects may look strange to familiar Soldat players, but freaking awesome to fresh eyes.

Gameplay changes - Well the big one was the addition of self-bink. At the time of implementation it underwent... rigourous flaming. Now I would say that the addition was probably one of the better decisions. It really expanded the tactical viewpoint of the game. Since Soldat is still very young bold moves are inconvenient, but necessary.

The lobby chat's biggest impact will be on the community. Will we see more people contributing to Soldat or simply give people a new place to 'vent'?

New WM and BE. (and some bugfixes)
I don't really care about adding head explosions, lobby chats and whatnot..

If you would be a modder you would realise that we need it (even if it would add just a little s*it to modability).

I am a modder, and I am for the updating from 1.4.2 to 1.5 I just want to see other opinions.

Why do we upgrade to 1.5?

1) Updates
Why would you let a game remain as it is if it can be further improved but yet retain what keeps the game unique? For example, the fact it is very moddable and it is a 2D multiplayer shooting game with jets. At first, Soldat players could not prone or backflip etc. Now with them, look at how much more intense and fun Soldat has become! For weapon modding, we used to be unable to control the recoil whether in realistic or normal mode, now we can. Another good example is the upcoming lobby chat.

2) Bugs
Games aren't meant to have bugs or glitches. They must be fixed, lest they be abused or cause major problems. For example, people grabbing a flag, then abusing a certain glitch to make them stuck and unkillable, which ultimately gives their team an unfair victory.

3) Balancing
No game will ever be PERFECTLY balanced, but making the effort to balance the game time after time will make the game more playable and enjoyable. Who would want to play a game where everyone only does/uses one thing because that is the only weapon worth using or simply over-effective? For example, the Barrett. Almost everyone used the Barrett because it was so powerful, now it's properly balanced and seen as a more respected weapon.

The Barrett was uber hacky-Mchackhack. I never played onlin until 1.3.1 and now the better 1.4.2

you're kidding right? 1.4.2 is filled with bugs, not to mention the balance is horrible.

I'll add this to the already growing list of pro 1.5 comments:

Stability

I've noticed that even with the ActionSnap Bug of Death (tm), Soldat 1.5 runs at a much more consistent framerate on my system (ADM 1.2Ghz w/Radeon card).   What used to be an unplayable lag-fest at 100ms, is now a treat at a whopping 180-200ms.  Were 1.5 in widespread production use, I would be able to reach twice as many playable servers as I can now.

Ongoing Maintenance

If I had to wager why this release took so long, it probably has something to do with the changing of hands from MM to the current team of developers we have now.  Typically, there's a lot of time spent learning a codebase and getting inside the head of the original author when this happens; it really is unavoidable.  There may have been some re-designing of the game's internals along the way as well.  In the end we're in a really great position as a community since the game is less likely to be abandoned, and more likely to be bugfixed, any time soon because of all this.

Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake.  Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big old storm right in the eye and says, "Give me your best shot. I can take it."

Do we really need a soldat 1.5?

No. Did we really need a Soldat 1.4.2? Or 1.3.1? Or Soldat at all?

I can't find fault in attempting to improve the game.
