ctf_Iron (needs finishing)
« on: July 29, 2008, 03:30:46 pm »
Basically, this is my first attempt in map making.  The map itself is far from finished, all I've done is set up the basic layout of the map, along with where I think the flags/spawns/ect. should be.  What I'm looking for here is for someone to come in, set up some scenery, some texture and maybe fine tune the map a bit.

The map layout of reminiscent of death2, but is much more closed in then it looks from the pictures.  The top route seems like it'll have a huge affect as to which team wins, which is what I was trying to aim for.  As for the main route, I tried to put a lot of focus on bullet blocking poly hugging the ground. (allows players to through it, but not bullets/nades)  It allows for attacking players to dodge most defensive fire till they can get up close and personal to get the flag.  As for the shape and the actual look of poly, that probably should be changed around a bit to fit with the map, and allow players to notice its use more easily.

I've yet to actually test this or add much of anything along the lines of bot waypoints or scenery, but thats why I'm posting it here.  Here's a quick overview of the map, along with the download of the map itself.

I like the overall layout, but there are a couple issues that need ironing out (heheheh).

1. The poly structure is like the wikipedia article on addition. WAY MORE COMPLICATED THAN IT NEEDS TO BE. Simplify, simplify, simplify. Keep verticies touching verticies.

2. Sharp edges. Picture attached, smooth them out.

The middle body ressembles 2 eyes and a beak. You purposely made it look like an owl u douchebag.

The bottom part basically becomes flag to flag spray for that route which you never want.

Yep, I see sprayfest on the bottom route and a lot of spawnkilling on the top route. It's unavoidable but you can definitely tweak it to minimize the amount of it.

That was a lazy critique (yes I am analyzing your comment...). You say to "tweak it." Tweak what? Be more specific ::)

For the lack of routes, this would be an insane battle on the top route, as it might be more preferred since it is more protected, unless you want to be quick... in that case, the "only bullets collide" section is very useful. It would break up the fighting a bit, but that section could lead to mass pushing as it is very direct and straight.

Now a majority of the problems could be solved if there weren't too many players playing: maybe a 3vs3. But then, since it appears that each flag is in sight of each other, and thus relatively close, there would be problem of protecting the flag. Also, capping could be relatively easy provided the situation was awry for the opposing team. A simple capture, planned flag toss and cap could be done all too quickly.

Eh, this looks a bit M79 friendly, and a bit sniper friendly, although provided that this map is small, the sniper doesn't look like the most effective weapon out there.

Yes, round the sharp edges. That would be a good thing to do. I recommend making the bottom blue strip solid, and then to make the ground under that a bit more collaborative so as to create another route to take. Then, if that was done, to make some sort of middle-route barrier in the middle of the map to separate each side a bit more. That would solidify a bit more of a "base" for each team. If you would like me to include a pic of what I mean, I shall whip one up quickly.

I wanted the map to have a fast passed, high score feel to it.  And I do see what you mean about the jagged edges, those probably do need to be fixed.

As for the blue strip, I could actually now see that go either way as solid, or just a bullet blocking poly.  I wanted it to be the latter of the two to add a more fast passed gameplay, and allow people to get in close to escape any defensive sprayers.  But I think you may be right in that it would do better as being solid.

Ummm...? The map obviously. What the hell else would I talk about? I don't need to go in fine detail about every ounce of problem that I believe could be a potential problem if I don't want to. It's his map and if he likes it that way, then so be it.
