2D Multiplayer shooter (Xbox and PC)
« on: August 01, 2008, 01:14:30 pm »
Hi,

i hope it is ok that i talk about my game...  ;)
I am currently developing a 2D Multiplayer shooter similar to Soldat but with a physics engine. The game is being played in splitscreen.

Here is a youtube video and some screenshots of its current state - may be you have some feature requests or could give me tips what you would like to have got in the game:

ditch the crappy music.

Just keep the controls tight and the latency low.

No duh.

Hopefully you get rid of the splitscreen and implement online multiplayer instead. Splitscreen is a pain on the eyes.

And splitscreen = Screen cheating, which is gay.

Yeah, XBOX live and online play solves everything. Actually, screw the game being on PC format. Soldat's on that format. Xbox would be great. (Even though I don't own one)

It's on XNA, so PC and XBox formats are natively compilable.

Looks really good!

and I agree to what 4yo said, 2d and homebrew games can't beat other games in terms of graphics.
So you have to tighten the gameplay.

No, it cannot be free if it will be released for a console. You can't just acquire (purchase a license of) Microsoft's XBOX SDK with the intention of releasing games for free.

uhh, Soldat has a physics engine.

edit: This thread of yours doesn't really concern Soldat. I think you should have posted it in the Lounge.

He means an environment physics engine as well, like swinging platforms, and, as shown in the demo, movable and exploding barrels.

You can. Did you hear about XNA? Take a look at creators.xna.com
But if i release it on XBLA i will have (and want)  to charge some money. It will be between 400 and 1000 MS-Points. I think this will be approx 6 Euros, which should be ok.
It will be free for Windows.

And yes, i wasn't really clear regarding the physics engine. mxyzptlk is right - i meant it will be an environmental physics engine. The dealt damage through bullets will be calculated of the bullets mass and its velocity.
And, for example, if you hit a barrel and it falls onto a opponent, this will deal damage too. If the player was killed you will get a point as well.

You are right. Could you or a moderator move this thread into the correct forum? Sorry.

No, that will always be impossible. This topic is talking about the game this guy is creating which is similar to Soldat and works on an Xbox360.

Yea, I know, but I was just wondering if there was any possible way to ever get it on the 360. That would be the best man.... I would never have to move from my couch to my PC ever again!

I improved the physic engine to increase the maximum number of objects, the Xbox can handle.
Here is a video of a physics test i made:

There is only one way that that would ever be possible: if Soldat got to work absolutely perfectly with Wine and the Xbox360 Linux project also got finished enough to support high end graphics. I'm not sure if either will ever happen, however.
