I've just downloaded it to use while playing, but I have no idea how to use it.

The help files don't help at all.

the main question is do I need to put in a server IP to be able to use it, and would that mean renting a server?

Find someone who has a server and use theirs. Also use push to talk, its alot more dandy than the other.
