Murphy's law.
« on: August 09, 2008, 07:37:21 am »
"Whatever can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time, in the worst possible way".

Murphy's law, all of us have run into it at some point or another, whether knowingly or not. It's also knowns as Sods law,  because it would happen to any poor sod who needed such a catastrophic event the least. It got me thinking about the whole "If anything can go wrong, it will, or it already has." notion and i thought about it for a while and after googling it i came across a website that was all about it with some interesting quotes (Made by other people i think).

If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the FIRST to go wrong

Murphy's Constant
Matter will be damaged in direct proportion to its value

This one got me thinking a bit and it seems like it's true enough. If a ball is hit by a child, the chance of the ball smashing a window is in proportion of the equivalent cost of the house said window belongs to.

You cannot successfully determine beforehand which side of the bread to butter.
The chance of the buttered side of the bread falling face down is directly proportional to the cost of the carpet.

After you bought a replacement for something you've lost and searched for everywhere, you'll find the original.

If you fool around with a thing for very long you will screw it up.
If it jams - force it. If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.

I found it amusing, but also kind of true... ;D

The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Yeah...one of my friends owns a business which a bunch of workstations with extremely important data on them. He got tired of their hard drives crashing so he set all of them up to use two identical hard drives in a RAID1 setup, which means their two drives are always going to have exactly the same stuff on them and if one crashes, he'd still have the other one.

On the first day, one of the RAID controllers died ;p

It's one of those things that you don't think about, but your brain makes it real if you focus on it. Like things happen in threes, if you really look at every situation, you almost subconscioulsy say oh, well 3 things bad happened to me, but you kind of count out things that are good. It's all in your head.
