Apparently, the photochemical smog in bejing isn't only contributed by the cars, their natural topography is in an awkward place, like in between the ocean and a mountain. Their airshed can't release the amount of pollution in the air, the katabatic winds just rebound off of the mountain and end up sitting over the city. It's because of pollution, but there's nothing they can do. by stopping cars on the roads, they're not going to fix the problem.

No, it's true, Brisbane's CBD has the same kind of problem, it's just not as severe, yet.

because Brisbane is in between the ocean and the mountains. The pollution gets caught and can't escape and be replaced with clean(ER) air. hence, photochemical smog forms.

I don't know where you learned math, but last I checked, 79 > 76.  And I don't know which gymnastics you watched, but silver and bronze, along with gold and silver in the women's indy, aren't exactly disastrous results.  Besides, China has probably 4-5 times the population base that we do.  They should be sweeping the Olympics, and they aren't.

So yeah, screw you.

Actually, about the "China is used to polluted air" thing you guys are talking about, it's quite true.

Try flying overseas to another country or even just getting from a polluted outdoor environment to a very clean indoor area. You'd realize that you may need some time to adapt to the place if you're new to the environment or have not been there for a long time, because the atmosphere etc is different, so the kind of training the athletes may have done in one place may not work as well as in another. So ya, it's quite true that China has a bit of advantage. Even indoor air. It still counts.

But then again, Olympics are always held in different locations every time it happens.
