Actually, about the "China is used to polluted air" thing you guys are talking about, it's quite true.

Try flying overseas to another country or even just getting from a polluted outdoor environment to a very clean indoor area. You'd realize that you may need some time to adapt to the place if you're new to the environment or have not been there for a long time, because the atmosphere etc is different, so the kind of training the athletes may have done in one place may not work as well as in another. So ya, it's quite true that China has a bit of advantage. Even indoor air. It still counts.

But then again, Olympics are always held in different locations every time it happens.

Oh boo-hoo, stop whining. America has a good education system - except the students don't even care about learning. Alright, so America has had some downfalls, but we are still strongly in first/second place despite all the other 'developed nations' out there competing. Intelligence isn't everything, it takes hard work and dedication as well. I think all that unemployment in here is actually toughening ourselves up for some real action, where as those 'more developed' nations with all their fancy tech and what not are probably afraid of lifting a box by themselves. It's all about balance people, and that's my two cents.

Well, Iceland is the most developed nation in the world according to the HDI.  They're also the hardest-working society in the world, with the average Icelander holding two jobs!  Usually developed societies are developed because they're hardworking.

Speaking of polluted-airs, I've checked it out, and it really efffects the marathon runners alot. When Kenneth Rundell of Marywood University in PA had tested 15 college hockey players bike flat out for 6min, breathing first low, then high particulate air; and by their second ride in the polluted air, the subjects' performance had decreased an average of 5.5%. That's about a loss of 7 min for marathoners..... So yeah, no way in hell they were able to set a new record in marathon.
