rr.soldathost.com doesn't work

edit: uh, config.soldathost.com is a home comcast connection with horrible pings (from here I ping 99ms, and I'm in New York)

Are you hosting these game servers from home??

Sure seems like it, curl -I shows config.soldathost.com and soldathost.com to have different software powering them (I'm guessing the latter is hosted by a normal webhost). I don't know if it matters, but the whois database also has different information on those two domains.

His nameservers are pointed to Dreamhost.

His Home router is Linksys model. I had one just like it.

I guess the "Dreamhost" button at the bottom of his main website doesn't give it away?

Most of his other topics got removed since he had one in practically every single sub-forum here -_-

Yes, I do have a server and a 6Mbit connection at home.

CentOS is the OS of choice, and if you ping 99 in NY, that's your fault.  I have played with people from the west coast at 80ms.

You're welcome to try it out: soldat://71.206.177.22

I'll more than likely be moving to openhost once i get 2 or 3 subscribers.

umm...hosting a few full 32 player Soldat servers is going to saturate that 6Mbit connection...

Yeah, you can't prove that one with math.
uhh...yeah, I can.

According to FliesLikeaBrick's Server Bandwidth calculator, if you are hosting 5 servers with 32 players each (160 players) it recommends you have at least a 24Mbit connection.

So.....

In all of soldat right now, there's 224 players online
1.007Mbit per 32 slot full server
thats a comfortable 160 players supported at 6mbit
all but 64 players can be on at the same time, or about %71 of the total Soldat players worldwide
There will never be that many people on at once on the east coast, let alone on servers I host.  If there were - i'd upgrade.
But for the record, I plan on moving the host to a full un-metered 10Mbit fiber connection as soon as i get 2 or 3 subscribers.

You also can't include everything at once in that bandwidth calculator.  That accounts for increased data to each player as more people join the server.  You're simulating a server wtih 160 slots.  The more people join, the more data EACH client has to be served - it grows exponentially.

The real math is this below, times 5 servers:

32 players
Your monthly bandwidth usage will be at most 329.27 GB
Your connection usage will be at most 128.91 KB/s
Your connection needs to be at least 1.007 Mbit/s (1031.25 Kbit/s) upload. I recommend you have at least 256kbit/s more than that.
(keep in mind kbit/s is not Kbit/s)

C'mon dude, you really think it takes 1/4 of a hard wired ethernet cable at 100Mbit half duplex for 160 slots?  All the Soldat hosts would be broke.  the fact is that I'm doing this out of my own pocket and I don't plan to make ANY profit until I have quite a few customers.  I think it's a great service to the community.

You're doing this from your home connection, which wasn't designed for hosting anything in the first place. All major server hosts advertise that they host on a 100MBit connection (which they do, for a real reason), shouldn't you do the same?...oh, yeah, you'd be lying your ass off.

Don't bust your ass and wallet for a bunch of online people you'll never meet in real life.

Don't like being proved wrong on the internet, I see.

SoldatHost.com is a great service, and I'm giving it to the community as a learning experience to myself.  Buying anything more than the home connection I'm starting with would be overkill, upgrades with business are always the smartest way to go.

I also see that you have absolutely no idea what a 100Mbit connection costs per month - hehe:

Quote
$1000 a month, is definetly not the right price! If you could get that kind of pricing, I would go for it in a second!!! An OC-3 at Level 3 costs around $37,000 a month with a $8,000 set up fee. You can go to http://www.ispworld.com/isp/bb/n_america.htm to check out backbone pricing.

...you host this from your home ? No one tells you to buy an OC-3 but a dedicated server would be a good start. You can find these around 100 dollars per month.

From what I can see from rentals.u13.net, u13 is hosting around around 40 servers. His servers are stored in a datacenter and hosted on a really powerful computer with a real server-grade internet speed and connection. You can't dream of hosting 20 servers on a home based connection, especially with only a 6MBit connection..

No, I don't work with u13 for anything at all. I'm just paying FliesLikeABrick for really reliable email.

Of course it's a dedicated box...

Just because of this conversation, I think I'm going to lower my prices again tonight... 11.99 for 32 slots?  Hrmm.. OK!
