Slower Walking - Strafe
« on: August 22, 2008, 06:53:38 pm »
Well I thought this would come in very handy when playing, holding SHIFT to strafe which would allow you to walk slowly and silently. It hasn't yet been added and would make a good difference to the game.

Actually it's not a good idea because soldat is a fast paced game, and since movement is pretty much entirely based on jumping/skipping these days, normally running (without jumping.skipping) would be the equivalent to "walking" in soldat.  It's not your average shooter, and to be honest there is no real such tactic as a strafe in soldat because that's what you're doing anyway, because it's 2D

There's no point in trying to be being stealthy in Soldat. People can always see where you are and a lot of people have their sound turned off anyway.

Hmm...

Well, such movements don't work in games like Soldat, even if it is realistic mode. Too fast paced, and being stealthy is pointless unless in some circumstances (Eg: Realistic, Predator Mode), but generally stealh is not needed. Besides, all movement except Jets (and if you happen to hit a poly) are silent or almost silent.

We "run" by hopping and jumping forward really quick. We walk by just holding A or D down. We "strafe" by crouching (its slower, less body exposed, a bit more accurate if you stay still). We "crouch" by proning (that is if you're on the ground, in the air its a different story).

Just press crouch... who would use strafing in Soldat?

Yeah crouch - or just hold down the direction key <-- I do this a lot when I'm sniping

And besides walking "like a bot" is already slow as feck - why do we need any slower?

No, don't think non-realistic is everything. It would be very useful in R/S. Trying to get behind enemy and trying to move without betraying your location.

Holding shift? You will get that annoying little filter keys window, which minimizes Soldat.

Who the hell uses filterkeys? Who doesn't disable them as soon as possible?

Still, F11. Not in the spirit of Soldat.

Crouching is good enough. Not only does it have the benefits of the "strafe", but also reduces body exposure.

Sticky keys? Well, just make sticky keys pop up when you are free (or when it appears), then disable it by finding some options.

Strafe: Running sideways/sidestepping so that would be the wrong word for it... But for moving slower...there is no real need to make a sneak key because it isn't that hard to do currently, the person can't see you behind them which makes it easier(in realistic) and crouch + walking makes you go slow enough and you can even go prone if you still think crouching is to fast.
And as the lyrics go in the United State's national anthem: "America, f**k YEAH!".

If you mean strafing as most people know it, then I would imagine that you'd fall off the stage, considering that all the stages are 2D.

If you mean walking slower, then there really isn't a point to it, like everybody already said.

Stupid idea, really.

So the only reason to ever add this is so it would look cool in movies?
