Serious Game Discussion: MAG
« on: August 24, 2008, 04:13:53 am »
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/sony-unveils-256-player-mag-massive-action-game/

E3 was over a month ago but I did not pay attention to it. This however, peaked my interest with stumbling today.

256 Players on one real time battlefield. That is insane! I would like to see how this game does when it comes out.
Is this the future of online gaming? As Bytes across all planes increase (drive space, memory and bandwidth) it only makes since that video games try to do more and more at once. I believe servers can handle it but as usual, current games are pushing the edge of technology. So your gonna have to put down another 1k to upgrade your computer for this game.

Could you see your self looking around in a digital world and seeing action all around you. Thinking that every avatar has a human body controlling it somewhere in the world. I would be in awe of how far technology has come. I would like to re-create old battles, like the Alamo and see what it was like. Everyone gets one life and after there is a winner, they do it all over again.

Is there any other type of game that would be awesome with 256 players?

It wouldn't surprise me if rockstar advertised it like that...
"GTA: run your car into 320 players online!"

It's a PS3 exclusive...

Makes me think twice about selling this thing. So far, the only game I've liked on it was GTA IV. MGS4 was boring, so I swapped it for Battlefield: BC, but playing fps with a controller is still a bit of a pain for me.

Pfft. Blitz 1941 had (at times) well over 200 people on a battlefield at one time. It's a shame the game closed its global service. :/

Putting down 1k for upgrading a computer won't help, I mean wouldn't get very lagging with 265 people?
If not, then I guess upgrading would be a good choice. This is very interesting, I can't to see whats in store for another 10-20 years in gaming.

Planetside has like how many people to a field? Hundreds? Anyway looks pretty epic. Would play it, but I'm not dropping $500 for a PS3.

O rly? Then never mind. No one plays PS3 online anyway.
I would still like to fight wars online.

256 models on the screen without having to render AI is not very tasking at all, just hope the connection is good.

although a full server would probably never happen (all the ps3 owners playing together at once!) I think this is a pretty stupid idea. Whenever they try to set a new standard they put all their effort into making it actually work and no effort into the actual game. The jet car trying to set a land speed record doesn't have any of the comforts of your average toyota.

Besides, getting 128 people to use teamwork would be the biggest struggle in terms of gameplay, not to mention some douche in a jet could just bomb the hell out of a whole company of players.

You can hardly get 8 people to work together.

So this is more of a publicity stunt rather than a game worth playing. Oh poo.

How many people does it take to fill up a WOW server?

I would guess several thousand, but who would want to spend the money on such an expensive server if you don't collect monthly?

Let them download it from free and give then the first month free. Super fast, large servers.
I would pay to have a server I could always join and had a low ping in.

A server that supports so many more people would have to be much larger than your average BF2 server. And a free month wouldn't exactly offset the multi million dollar budget.

Blah, why do you have to be so negative. Our society lacks dreamers.
