The forum as it evolves..
« on: August 24, 2008, 04:44:15 pm »
Hey people, doing a little personal study here.
Do you think the forums have improved over time, and why/why not? Also, please answer the poll, and feel free to discuss. :)

As for me, I was active back in the forums. Anddespite losing some of it's more interresting members, I think the forums have improved.

Thanks,
echo

I honestly can't say whether or not the forums have improved because too many things have changed. The way the forums have progressed has brought about both benefits and drawbacks, but the changes are simply too many for me to say that the forums have definitely improved or deteriorated.

The members are different, the strictness of the rules is different, the atmosphere itself is completely different.

Ah yes. I was way more active on the old forums. Had over 1000 posts there, not counting the lounge and bash pit ones.
But then I was way more active with soldat stuff. Frequently visited the other sections of the forums, and even had my own video project going (soldat gags) Had big plans to revive the series actually, but I never got the ball rolling.

Was also alot of members back then that are no longer active. People that made great comics, mods and other stuff, but we still have that I guess.

I was a member for a short time in the old forums. I think I joined there after playing Soldat for around two years, somewhere right before we switched over to the new ones. I don't remember much of the old forums (probably because I was 11 at the time); but I do remember how the site looked (I've got one or two screenshots), that almost everyone had like 3000 posts, and that I posted a few maps and some probably extremely childish replies to a bunch of topics.

IMO th Forums are improving slightly all the time. We are all having difficulties like new people, idiots, spammers, and such, but new people slowly start to fit in, idiots are just being kicked in their asses, and spammers get warned (or banned). And about old forums, I wasn't even there, was I?

Its all alright to me, nothing has really changed. I've been around longer than people think, I just never post. They have changed but then again I can't really tell you about the old forums because I was like 12. In general though, I think they have just changed. Not good or bad, its just different.

I got here a while after the old forums, but I'd lurked for a while there as a guest.

I can't really say, but the old forums seemed a lot more organized to me.

Despite being a relatively newer Soldat player/forum-goer (April 2006 on 1.3.1), and not being a member of the old forums (which are famous or infamous from what I've observed, depending on which perspective you take), from what I have witnessed so far, it seems that there isn't much progress in terms of new personalities or discussions. All current threads in The Lounge consist of either sporadic and random posts with little relevance to the original topic or redundant posts that further the "discussion" nowhere.

We have ignorant complaints about the weapon balances from new people virtually all the time, with their prompt disappearance soon afterward due to aforementioned trolls or people who are simply too harsh on newcomers. Speaking of the weapon balance, I wonder if the beta testers even pay attention to that section anymore.

We have a handful of resident trolls, which, because they are "entertaining" or "fun", are amazingly still here, while contributing little other than inane ramblings of nonsensical mumbo jumbo or causing derailment of otherwise decent threads or grievances and calling every other person a lovergot or female dog.

It's a shame, really, that some of the more sane and intelligent forum members have been forced to having this forum overrun by teenagers with too much free time on their hands.

I also feel as if I am noticed little or otherwise not noticed at all due to the fact that I usually don't speak my mind about others and/or use every curse word known to man in half of the posts I make.

In short, do I think the forum has improved? No, but I also don't think it has degraded, either. It simply needs... change.

@Twistie: I definitely see where you're coming from, mate, and I think much, if not everything, you said is true. But that's just the negative side, and I think there's a positive one as well. After all, new blood is what'll make soldat hold on in the future, and it secures it's continuing development. And what you say about not being noticed, I think that's wrong actually. I think many of the more steady 'elitist' forumers, such as yourself, help provide a certain guide in terms of behaviour. I think many of the newcomers 'look up' to you, and 'cept for the lounge, there's actually a chance you might have an impact. Well, let's face it, the lounge is lost.

i disagree entirely with this. the minute you start focusing more on being 'intelligent' or 'mature' is the minute you stop just trying to be interesting, and anyone who has to demonstrate their perceived intelligence everywhere they possibly can is simply a moron with something to prove. so while i disagree with the irritating, repetitive bullshit of 4chan, it's still a lot better than dry, tedius ramblings about whether or not there is a god, or "I NEED HELP WITH LINUX"

Twist knowing where you go besides these forums... your opinion is going to be crap. Your zelda forums are filled with a bunch of emo-teeny moist place between the legss all coddling each other and telling everyone they are special. Once the average age gets past 13 we can stop treating each other like infants and start insulting each other like real men do.

And you are totally wrong, I see God threads on r9k all the time frogboy.

Because he posts like he is still there? Also they are the reason he types out long boring posts to begin with. They all go crazy when he looks up a $2 word on dictionary.com and uses it in a debate.

And when the heck did I ask you to be my friend? I don't care if you think what I say is cool or not. Doesn't stop me from being right though.

No they didn't, because morons like you totally missed the point. It was suppose to be a place where people could rip into people and create delicious drama for others to feed off of, but no you morons had to screw that up as well.

Ah, so I'm supposed to be typing a reply to that, but not include any "$2 word on dictionary.com" and not make it long and boring to read. So what do you say to that?

I didn't ask you to be my friend, because quite frankly, you're a douche. And ah, so now I have to make my reply longer than that? Wouldn't that be so boring to read? Like the dumb religion threads that people and you make almost every month?

MAKE UP YOUR DAMN MIND.

Ironically, it was the Lounge that did most of the gleefully tearing into people and creating delicious side-drama whilst everyone else talks about linux setups and this thread. Where the Fisting board failed in your objective, it made up for hilariously lacking in creativity postings.

I'm somewhat of an old-time player, but never got into forums until probably 2.5 years after playing soldat with Fractured and now here.

I'm usually here just to look at soldat movies and maps, but as far as I can see, it seems that to any forum, actually any community in general...

As time progresses, the service and structure seems to better in terms of convenience.

Yet, most "old-timers" have that nostalgic feeling of what was, such as what they were accustomed to and who used to be in it, rather than what it is now.

If "we" meant just yourself, then I guess that would be true. There are new players everyday and the old regulars who still play. And I think most people come here to actually to contribute besides the spammers. Just look at all the mods, maps, movies, scripting, etc.. The forums will be entertaining as long as soldat is alive and as long as there are contributors who help improve soldat.

As for coming here to just "screw around," enjoy yourself doing that.

Basically, to me, SF is pretty much the same as every other game forum in existance. Same stock characters, same discussions, etc. Any changes from the norm were short lived or small enough to pretty much be unnoticed. That is from a perspective of someone who joined the forums 1.3.1 era. Every game forum I've been to is filled with a) Retards who complain about something that has been complained about for years b) Staff c) People who actually visit the site regularly and are somewhat knowledgeable and c) the trolls. Soldat is no different. The occasional thing happens on this site that is different, but most of it is gone a few months afterword. (Bash pit is a good example)

I remember getting just over 1000 posts when the announcement came about the new forum. I do miss the old days as it did seem more active and people were much funnier to talk too but that's maybe because I was 14 and it was the first forum I stayed on. Most people played the game too.

It's been over 6 years since I registered and I still like it here ;)

Well, I've never been to the old forums, but I have to say this forum (the Lounge anyway; it's the only place I post anymore) has stayed pretty much the same.  Sure, people come and go; Vjichti was replaced by *Mangled (sorry for the comparison, V; I'm just making a point) and there have been other replacements of that nature, with old debaters being replaced by new ones.  I know there was sort of a recession in serious discussion between then and now (yes, serious discussion is really the only measure of this forum that I use), but we're back with fresh faces trying their best to live up to the elders of days past.  Discussion isn't quite at the level it used to be (less truly intelligent people and more opinionated people that use proper grammar), but at least we're making steps forward, right?

EDIT: What a weird format.  Sentence start, parentheses, sentence conclusion.  Crazy.

Let's not romanticize. The old forum was a mess. DNA.Styx was eager to ban on a whim. Moderation was abused. The bash pit was a nightmare. Remember keyword ads? Archiving? I could go on. Seriously, stop stretching the truth.

Duke, Hitman, JayBee... I miss them. But just like every other years-old forum out there, we've found some damn fine replacements.

Weren't that much different besides the fact we had a handful more of older folks running around.

It seemed like we were all closer, really. Of course, that also meant a lot of drama and you could always find some sort of e-fistfight in the Bash Pit.

Personally, I think I had a stronger connection to some forumgoers in the previous forums than in these. In retrospect, I think a lot more people were excited about Soldat back then than they are now.

I've changed so much since the new forums that I hardly remember what it was like. I mean, I have some idea, but I think it might be twisted from how much people are talking about it, to how it actually was. all in all, I'm pretty satisfied with what we have now, at least I think it has some potential still. Could be worse.
I fucking miss all you cunts!
